Dublin show on the 6th.

I wanted to take a quick moment and post a note on the forum from my iPhone in Dublin. My wife and I have been visiting Ireland for the past week and part of the trip was to see the band play at the Olympia. We had tickets for the sat show and at the last minute added the Sunday performance as well. And what a treat the shows were!!

The performances were top notch acts both nights. The band played rock solid, and Shane did a pro job at the mic. We have seen the band play many times in N. America and what a joy it was to be part of the fun here at the Dublin shows. It was a true testament to the abilities of these fine performers!

And now with sharp accuracy I can say to those of you on the forum who gripe about the band.....give it up! Find a new pass time and leave the other fans to the fun of it all!

To the band, thank you for a wonderful weekend! And safe travels on the rest of the tour!

P.s. My wife and I hope James had time to buy new trousers after the big slide on Sunday nite!

I was as “happy as the horse’s shite” walking out of The Olympia on Sunday night. I had watched Friday’s Pogues’ performance from a ‘lazy bastard’ seat in the balcony. On Sunday, I chose to stand downstairs, and I’m happy to say the band, and the lead singer, sounded just as good. The setlist, from memory, was the same as Friday. The performance was every bit as entertaining and enthralling.

I thought the addition of the brass section on numbers like ‘Kitty’ and ‘Sunnyside’ was fantastic. The resurrection of ‘Metropolis’ to the set was another highlight. As on Friday night, the band was pure class. Between them, even in a single show, they play a vast collection of instruments. Take James, I saw him play accordion, piano, and mandolin (I think that’s what it was). How he leaps around with that accordion is beyond me. I saw him hobbling offstage at the end of the show, so maybe he’ll have to calm down for the rest of the tour.

As for the singer, well for my money Shane was a little slower off the blocks on Sunday night. As a result, there were a few small issues with timing and lyrics. However, as I’ve often noticed, he improved as the set went on and he really nailed the slower songs especially ‘Kitty’, ‘Soho’, and ‘OMD’. His revised lyrics to ‘Fiesta’ cracked me up!

To me following The Pogues has always been like supporting a football team. Sometimes they win (a great gig), other times they draw (an average gig), or lose (the less said about those the better!!). Friday and Sunday, for me, were both great Pogues gigs. The band, lead singer, and audience were brilliant. The Olympia is ideally suited to a Pogues gig. It holds a decent sized crowd to generate a great atmosphere, but it’s intimate enough to see what’s happening onstage from pretty much anywhere.


Special credit has to go to the Pogues crew. I think Paul Scully still operates the mixing desk on the floor, and there’s another sound engineer onstage. I know sweet f-all about how these guys and their equipment work but, on both nights, the mixing excellent.

Incidentally, the unanimous Medusan praise for the Olympia as a Pogues venue is certainly echoed by the band and crew and will have been noted by our promoters too. We would especially like to thank Denis Desmond for his thorough renovation of the backstage and dressing rooms area, which I don't think had a serious overhaul since the days when Florrie Forde, Vesta Tilley and George Robey were our distant predeccesors and the old gal Olympia was called Dan Lowrey's Music Hall.

Usually we travel to Brixton to see the Pogues in December.

This year it was the Olympia in Dublin ... brilliant weekend, outstanding show.

If the Pogues will return next year we will too.

10 stars for the Friday show
10,5 stars for the Saturday show
9,85 stars for the Sunday show
Brixton is a terrific place for a Poguesshow but Olympia is even better
Greenland Whalefisheries have never rocked so hard as it did on the Saturday show
A Pair of Brown Eyes on Sunday, in the beginning I was crying because It's so Important that the song is played very slow.
The combination of the strong lyrics and a slow tempo makes the song so magnific and probably it is my favourite Poguessong. Shane started singing it slow but the band played it too fast as usual.
I missed one song in the setlist, I think that it would have been a nice gesture to perform "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" now when the magnificent Liam Clancy just passed away.

Does anyone have a list of the songs played in the pause between BOW set and the Pogues set, it's one song i'm looking for.

Have seen Shane & The Pogues lots of times through the years, I must say that the Friday and Saturday show at the Olympia it's the best shows i've seen (so far)
