Beautiful Days festival, Devon, August 22, 2009

Post Sun Aug 23, 2009 7:49 pm

No reports yet?

The only one floating at LJ is not exactly complimentary: The sadly late lamented Shane Mcgowan was joined on stage by seven soberly dressed undertakers for the Pogues final "Forget the pension, this is to pay for the Wake" tour. Might have sounded better if he'd had his teeth in. (posted here by quercus)

Here are some videos at least:

From one of the Facebookers....those are his vids posted on Youtube

Chris: Last night was exceptional. I have seen The Pogues many times and thought that I had seen them at their best.....How wrong I was.
There is a more detailed report on the P.R.S website. I will also post some links when I have uploaded video.

Sounds like it was a great shows!

It was the first time I have seen them at a festival since 1985 (though I have seen them headlining their own shows dozens of times), I think inevitably the performance will differ due to a different kind of audience.

I thought that the band weren't at their best on Saturday but enjoyed the show. Thousands are Sailing was the highlight of the set for me, Kitty was good and it made a pleasant change not to hear Fairytale of NY, great song though it is, there are many others I prefer in the Pogues catalogue.

My other highlights from the Beautiful Days weekend were Sonic Boom 6, King Blues, The Imagined Village, The Blockheads and Gong.

[edit] Just re-read this post and don't think it does everyone justice, the band were good but I think that Shane's performance wasn't up to the standard of the ones I have seen in recent December gigs [edit]

Well organised and totally stress free festival. Big credit to The Levellers for putting it together. Made a big change from Glastonbury and no Radio 1/NME involvement which was a true bonus.

Enjoyed The Pogues, took a couple of songs to get going but a thoroughly enjoyable set. The crowd appeared to enjoy the show from where I was standing with plenty of applause and cheering after each song. Liked the reference from Spider before Body of an American...."this one's for Omar" which seemed to go over most people's heads. Shame Poor Paddy had to be cut out of the set due to time restrictions but still got a 90 minute show.

Just had a look on the beautiul days forum and a mixed set of reviews from festival goers. Quite a few negative comments about Shane.

Other highlights for me were Imelda May, King Blues, Wonderstuff, Subhumans, Dub Pistols and of course The Levellers.
I never approve, or disapprove, of anything now. We are not sent into the world to air our moral prejudices.

Afternoon

I've seen the Pogues a fair few times down the years and on Saturday I decided it was about time that I saw them without a few beers beforehand. What a fantastic show. Thousands Are Sailing was sublime and the horns with Dirty Old Town was class.

I dismay at some of the blinkered opinions being spouted by the muppets on the Beautiful Days forum, it seems that those with the least to say are the first to post. Jeez, if you gave some of them a free tenner they'd moan about the colour of it. Great festival with some class acts, best of the six I've been to so far.

Running the risk of sounding like a gushing fan here but I want to say thanks to The Pogues for a mesmerising headline set to top of a brilliant day. You were great.

Cheers

We felt it was a terrific festival, wonderfully free of all the usual corporate crap. It was exceptionally well organised and, though we say so ourselves, we were on fire, no small matter after the highpoint of Drammen just two days before. Thanks to all.
