The holidays and funerals (wakes, really) are pretty much the final exam of sobriety, as I understand it, so don't beat yourself up too much. You'll have another chance to take the test again next year. Now back to work!

Ah well, you've done fabulous. Don't be redeeming the hip flask from the pawn shop just yet.

I am doing the dryatholon for January and am approaching it with some trepidation! :(

Lazing at home on a Saturday for the first time in over seven months, I am looking forward to new fulltime employment in the new year. I will trade my weekday job for my weekend one, full time.

Deep in a post-Christmas sleep, fuelled doubtless by excess of food and drink, I found myself in a dream involving a Pogues gig, in some venue that I couldn't quite work out.

Unusually for my dreams of Pogues gigs, the band were actually onstage and playing up a storm. When suddenly a special guest was rumoured then announced, and Mr Nick Cave appeared onstage with them. At this point, still in the dream, I found myself dropping off to sleep. Can't miss this, I told myself, I have to wake myself up properly to see it. Desperately tried to wake myself up, but couldn't open my eyes. Finally managed to drag myself back to real-time wakefulness, only to realise that in fact I'd really been asleep and dreaming about a stunning Pogues gig, and now I'd woken myself up I couldn't get back to it...

I've spoken to a lot of people on the internet today who agree that this year has been a bad one and not just Pogues fans either.

Here's hoping 2014 is lots better.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Oh lawdy, the nice new woman at the veterinary surgery has asked us to take a urine sample from the cat. Not sure exactly how it's possible to do this. I fear she may be taking the piss.

We just lay a plastic bag on the floor as our cats love to leave a puddle on them.
And I don't want no grave
Just throw my ashes in the field
And hope there's some soul left to save

Thanks for the tip. Our poor old cat tends to pee in the vague vicinity of the litter box these days, her aim has got a bit faulty. The vet in the end gave us some special cat litter to put in the box which doesn't soak up. I've just used a pipet to extract the required amount, and we will be taking the piss to the surgery later.

I'm guessing this may be the first ever discussion of cat urine on Medusa.

I hate cats. Sorry.

Anyway, the youngest was out shopping with her mammy on Saturday and met Shane's mother and father in Tesco. Her being the chatty one, she strolled up and said hello and said she loved The Pogues and that her daddy went to see them 3 times at Christmas. They passed the time of day and Mr. MacGowan shook her by the hand. When I came home from work she was busting to tell me her news and said Shane's mam was lovely and very posh.

Very cool says I. But did you ask Mr MacGowan was Shane planning a two week trip to the east coast of America in March?

You let me down my child
