Probably misguided (or badly advised by whoever advises him) to accept an interview on a serious news programme if all he wants to do is "promote the movie" rather than answer serious questions that he doesn't feel like answering...
Although, one might wonder at a program that decides to ask Tarantino "serious" questions, at least beyond the scope of cinema. He was on CBC's Q recently, and thought it was great that he was asked about the violence and the blood, in terms of liking it in movies and what he likes about it and what he's done with it. I mean, clearly, that's what he's about. Why the fuck would you think there was any point in asking him about Obama, or any president?
I think there's a cross-Atlantic difference in perspective here. C4 News is generally recognised to be the most "serious" of the mainstream news channels over here, and agreeing to be interviewed on it would generally be taken to indicate that you'd accept that you're likely to be asked "serious" questions. Especially as the interviewer is one of the news editors, not the arts editor.
And to be honest, then, rightly or wrongly, the subject of gun violence is more current over here than the subject of slavery. Not to say in any way that slavery isn't an important issue, still today. It's just the way the media work, however.
