I think it was that one copy of Always On My Mind that you bought, Fr McGreer, that tipped the scales.

I'm a bit confused, angry, and amused at the same time. My state...Florida, is currently facing it's all-time high for unemployment, since 1970. My County is slashing jobs accross the board due to budget shortfalls. My city, St Petersburg, is in a dire situation as well. Public services, (police, fire dept., emergency services, etc.,) are facing huge cuts.

YET, those running this city continue to budget hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for these services to accommodate this weekends Honda Grand Prix of St Petersburg. Priorities? WTF!
And don't get me started on the the Rays requesting a new baseball stadium. The only good thing here is that St Pete has them contracted for a long time.

I could be wrong........maybe it's just me that just doesn't quite comprehend this picture.

feel free to place this post in any thread you feel appropriate....politics, angry rant, WTF, where is the world headed, etc.

Hopefully someone has looked at the revenue stream brought to the city by hosting the Honda Grand Prix and calculated the tax revenue generated the city will "earn", and that it does indeed pencil out in favor of St. Pete.

And hope there's some soul left to save

Vancouver has the same problem only on a larger scale: the great revenue generator called the Olympics will be taking billions out of BC's economy for decades. And now the low-income housing which was touted as the reason people should support the Olympic bid is probably going to be sold at market prices.

My take? Honda promised big things that won't materialize in St. Petersburg. What's good for a few hotels and bars doesn't generally go very far toward services or infrastructure. The only people who really got profits out of 2010 were VANOC and the IOC and I'm betting Honda's getting lots of free advertising with little benefit to your city or state, dave 81.

Thread for things that REALLY dont deserve threads

Post Mon Mar 29, 2010 10:50 pm

I came in to post something remotely funny (very unworthy of any thread except this one), so just excuse me...
The girls at work blink confusedly/ or laugh hysterically when I say that I am 'Standing Like a Shag on a Rock.' One bright spark always says, 'Oh, and what's a shag on a rock like, then?' Hardy har har. Must be an Australian saying. So I decided to show them a few pics and found some interesting varieties of Shags and image descritions that I thought I'd share.
Rock Shag, Shag Colony, Imperial Shag, Casual Shag (no joke!) Pied Shag, Little Shag, Blue-Eyed Shag, Antarctic Shag, and the Rare endemic Chatham Island Shags. And here was I thinking there was only one kind of Shag on a Rock.

This cute little guy is an Antarctic Shag.

The common cormorant or shag,
Lays eggs inside a paper bag.
But what these unobservant birds
Have never noticed is that herds
Of wandering bears eating buns
Use the bags to hold the crumbs.

Not quite sure of the last two lines, but it's something like.

Casual Shag. Speaks for itself. Rare Endemic Chatham Island Shag. Hmm. Widespread but uncommon? Pied Shag. Follow the leader?

I am reasonably pleased that Medusa doesn't look like complete arse on an iPad. (posted from a friend's iPad. No, really.)

I've not tried the iPad but I check these fora fairly often from the iPhone. I have to do a little zooming and panning but it's not too bad. Only problem I have is the 25th anniversary logo is static on the page so if it is covering anything else when the page loads I can't get it out of the way. (posted from a Thinkpad. No, really.)

Speaking of which, isn't the 25th logo a little past it's expiration date?

I remember around 1970, I asked my mom for a pair of Converse "Chucks." "I am NOT spending NINE dollars for a pair of sneakers!"

My son plays Lacrosse so his school has an outting today. We're heading out to the new Meadowlands Stadium for a day of college Lacrosse with the family. It's the first offical event in the new building. I'm not much interested in the first game of the three today so I'll spend sometime investigating the new stadium. Hope I'm going to be pleasantly surprized.

Ahh and the Converse are hideous!
