The Wagoneers - Stout and High

A great album by one of the great forgotten country music bands of the 1980s. I didn't even know this came out on CD until I started browsing the Amazon marketplace. One of the best "finds" I've had in a long time.

Grievous Angel wrote:Did a little digging around a used CD store, which is always fun and occasionally unearths real gems. This time around, I picked up:

Todd Snider - Songs from the Daily Planet
John Brannen - The Good Thief
16 Horsepower - Sackcloth 'n' Ashes

16 Horsepower is a band I've heard of for years, but I've never picked up anything from them. Imagine a manic apocalyptic Southern preacher fronting a trio composed of whatever instruments they happened to find at the local pawn shop. They go right up there with House of Freaks as far as making some truly authentic American music. I'm definitely going to hunt down the rest of their albums.

I think "Low Estate" is 16 Horsepower's best album that I have heard, but I haven't heard anything in the last couple of years.

I just got Frances the Mute from The Mars Volta. A manic jam band with talent spilling out in every coherent and incoherent direction.

Marty Robbins "More Gunfightin' Ballads and Trail Songs" I've had the tape for a lot of years, and have finally found the CD. I think it is better than "Gunfightin' Ballads and Trail Songs."

Finally got "Red Roses for Me" the other day.

I got SIX Hank Williams 78s in the mail yesterday - and a bunch of them are songs I'd never heard before, so for me it was almost like Hank had just released a new album!

My Love For You (Has Turned To Hate)
Moanin' The Blues
I Just Don't Like This Kind of Livin'
Dear John
I Won't Be Home No More
Nobody's Lonesome For Me
You're Gonna Change Or I'm Gonna Leave

and the songs I knew from before are among my favorites:

Lost Highway
Cold, Cold Heart (this one skips, unfortunately)

and I got a Luke the Drifter 78 in the batch too - Too Many Parties & Too Many Pals/and Everything's Okay.

I need to break down and buy the 10-CD set of "The Complete Hank Williams" (even though it's NOT really "complete"). I love everything he ever did.
Disclaimer: These are my opinions and not fact as realised in these here United States, lest I give my friends the idea that everyone thinks like me.

You are amassing quite the Hank Williams collection of 78s there, O'Blivion. Yes, buy yourself the 10-CD set! What better use of money than to surround yourself with music you truly love?
