How is that, Esther? And how are YOU? Don't see you around here as much as I'd like. Hope all is well.

Well, thanks! I have been somewhat overwhelmed with many family/work obligations of late. Things are easing up at last.

As for twelve: I like it for the most part, in particular "Helpless" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (w/banjo!) There are some tunes I didn't care for the first time around, and still don't, so I pass those by. I haven't given the whole thing a real good listen, though, as it has been in my car for my short work commute and I just play the tracks I most enjoy.

O'Blivion wrote:I'm breathless over my latest purchase - last year at this time I bought my first Stanley Brothers 78 at a community yard/garage sale and it started me on the path to my current old-timey obsession. I went back later in hopes of buying the entire lot (several big boxes full) but couldn't find the right house. I also wanted to let the folks know I'd donated one of their mom's records to the Dr. Ralph Stanley Museum in Virginia.

Anyway, today the same community had a yard sale and HOOORAY!!!!! I found the rest of the 78s!!! I got the whole lot for $25. There aren't any more Stanley Brothers but so far I've found 2 Hank Williams records and a heap more cool obscure hillbilly stuff. AND I got to tell those folks how much my life had been enriched by accidently wandering into their garage last year.

I'm in Hillbilly Heaven!

This made me smile, O'Blivion! I am reminded of the time my then teenaged son found a pile of classical music LPs put out for trash and brought them home for his big sister, unaware of what a treasure he'd stumbled onto. There were well over a hundred high quality recordings in near pristine condition. My daughter (w/a major in music performance) was simply thrilled and was in her own kind of Heaven! Good for you for finding the rest of those 78s!

Some great albums there, idlebagger. I think the OB album is their best "new" album for years. Be interested to hear what you think of the Idlewild one -- I still haven't got round to buying it.

Just listening to Oysterband right now, and, on the whole, I'm mightily impressed, though Control and Someone Somewhere are a little filler-ish, imo. The rest of the album is excellent, though, and quite upbeat, and, dare I say, rocking!

The Idlewild album is a little dissapointing, especially after The Remote Part and Warnings/Promises delivered so well. That said there are a some damn fine songs on there, and it repays repeated listens.

Just received "Monkey Face Blues"/"Goin' Down Slow" by St. Louis Jimmy.
Fantastic piano blues.

Now waiting for SEVEN Stanley Brothers 78s I won on EBay the other day. Included in the batch is "Harbor of Love", my Sweetheart's favorite Stanley Bros. song.

Yippie!

Girl - Tiny Tim w/Brave Combo

I've not yet given this a listen as we got home at 2 AM from a wonderful Brave Combo show last night and I allowed myself the luxury of sleeping in.

You have quite the collection amassing there, O'Blivion!

oh MAN.

I got those Stanley Brothers 78s in the mail today.

They are MINT. MINT I tells ya.

I cannot describe how incredible these things sound. They're all Mercurys, from the early to mid 50s I guess. But they all sound like they've never been played. It's MIRACULOUS.

Included are their incredible version of Bill Monroe's immortal "Blue Moon of Kentucky"; Ralph's instrumental "Dickinson County Breakdown"; "Poison Lies"; "Baby Girl" - hey, we MET the lady this song was written about! Carter's daughter, Jeanie Stanley. She sang a country death song called "Lonesome Tombs" at the festival a few weeks ago.

"Memories of Mother"..."I Just Got Wise"...another Bill Monroe cover, "The Voice From On High"...JESUS. "This stuff almost makes me want to be a christian," said my Sweetheart.

This stuff is moving. Heartbrteaking and uplifting at the same time.

"I Long To See the Old Folks" has a line about whippoorwills singing in the twilight, and we remembered that we had sat in the same twilight listening to the same whippoorwills just last month - we were high on Clinch Mountain, right down the holler from "the Old Home" them Stanleys was always sangin' about. Brother Ralph, now DOCTOR Ralph Stanley, the bluegrass Methuselah, held sway down on the stage, wrasslin' death hisself and doing heartfelt recitations to Brother Carter, asleep with the angels right up at the top of the hill...

..sorry! This stuff transports me!

Only bummer...."Harbor of Love" got broken. The guy offered me a refund, but the other six records are SO amazing that I won't even think about it.

Just bought a couple of tribute albums, on the cheap from amazon. Sail Away: The Songs of Randy Newman, 2006, and Not Fade Away: Remembering Buddy Holly, 1996. Tribute albums are always spotty affairs, and these two are no exception. But each has a few standout tracks worth the (rather low, in my case) price of admission.

On the Newman tribute, The Duhks do a simply amazing Political Science, as relevant or more so today than when Randy wrote it. The Duhks are a Canadian band, from Winnipeg, and are everything a folk band should be. Saw 'em last year & they played this, it's why i sought out the disc. The Del McCoury Band & Sam Bush also have amazing tracks, Steve Earle is on here, Joe Ely... check it out:

As for Buddy Holly, the Hollies commit a terrible sin trying to re-record over an old vocal, Hank Jr. Style. But the Los Lobos take on Midnight Shift is too good for words. The Band & the surviving Crickets team up for a take on Not Fade Away that doesn't mess much with the original, but with 3 sets of drums, two basses, and Levon Helm singing... well, it's given a new kick, to put it lightly. Waylon Jennings (once Buddy's bass player) turns in a fine, haunting Learning the Game. Joe Ely is here, too, as are The Mavericks, The Tractors, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band...

Low Budget - The Kinks
For nostalgic reasons I love this record and had it on vinyl up until now.

Yes, my Sweetheart got me a copy of it for Xmas. Quite wonderful.

I used to think Crumb was nuts for being obsessed with all of that
OLD stuff. Ha ha ha!
