I bought a CD of the last Stanley Brothers show (Oct 16 1966) from Dr. Stanley himself - and got it autographed by two of the men who played on it - Dr. Stanley and guitarist George Shuffler.

It's got some stuff I've never heard, and also fantastic versions of several Carter Family songs ("old timers", as the late, great Carter Stanley calls them) and the immortal "Rank Strangers" and "Stone Walls and Steel Bars". Manna from Hillbilly Heaven!

It's actually not the very last show - they mention between songs that it's the afternoon show (in Bean Blossom Indiana) and they played a show that evening. Later that week Carter sang a few songs with Bill Monroe in a club in Nashville, and the next day the whole band started playing a concert at a high school in Hazel Green, KY, but Carter got ill and couldn't finish the show. By Dec 1 he was dead.

I love Guy Davis! I was lucky to see him live two or so years ago in a small public radio station studio. A wonderful show! I have Chocolate to the Bone and am reminded now to revisit his music.

A friend recently turned me on to Guy Davis and I really enjoy his music as well.

How is that, Esther? And how are YOU? Don't see you around here as much as I'd like. Hope all is well.

I'm breathless over my latest purchase - last year at this time I bought my first Stanley Brothers 78 at a community yard/garage sale and it started me on the path to my current old-timey obsession. I went back later in hopes of buying the entire lot (several big boxes full) but couldn't find the right house. I also wanted to let the folks know I'd donated one of their mom's records to the Dr. Ralph Stanley Museum in Virginia.

Anyway, today the same community had a yard sale and HOOORAY!!!!! I found the rest of the 78s!!! I got the whole lot for $25. There aren't any more Stanley Brothers but so far I've found 2 Hank Williams records and a heap more cool obscure hillbilly stuff. AND I got to tell those folks how much my life had been enriched by accidently wandering into their garage last year.

I'm in Hillbilly Heaven!

Did a little digging around a used CD store, which is always fun and occasionally unearths real gems. This time around, I picked up:

Todd Snider - Songs from the Daily Planet
John Brannen - The Good Thief
16 Horsepower - Sackcloth 'n' Ashes

16 Horsepower is a band I've heard of for years, but I've never picked up anything from them. Imagine a manic apocalyptic Southern preacher fronting a trio composed of whatever instruments they happened to find at the local pawn shop. They go right up there with House of Freaks as far as making some truly authentic American music. I'm definitely going to hunt down the rest of their albums.
