I've got some albums I bought in the past month or so but haven't had a chance to listen to properly. The Good, the Bad and the Queen is excellent -- kind of a weird mix of the Kinks and Blur and the Clash.

Seth Lakeman's Kitty Jay sounds all the same to my philistine ears.

Well, I wouldn't quite say that...
but actually I think Seth L's "Freedom Fields" is a better album. 8)

Currently working my way through a pile of free CDs that came with Rock'n'Reel.
Likes the warm feeling but is tired of all the dehydration.

I liked the title track, but got a wee bit bored with chap with loud but rather monotone voice, robust fiddling and blandish guitar  This is definitely a case of people's mileage varying. I have never forgiven the Lakeman brothers for that horror that was Equation, so poor old Seth may be having to work twice as hard to persuade me

I've got Freedom Fields as well in the 'to be listened to' mountain :) And the RnR albums are there as well -- got the latest issue yesterday.

Yeah, their having been involved in Equation should require some sort of penance, I think.

I'd say there's probably more variety in the tracks on Freedom Fields - I'd guess it gets listened to more in this house. Did you see the stuff in the press last week about one of the tracks on there, "The White Hare"? It got shortlisted for best trad track in the BBC Folk Awards, which led to a load of crusty old folkies getting hot under the collar because they reckoned it wasn't "trad".

You'll have to have your Carthy warning sensors switched on when you're listening to those free R'n'R CDs, Shaz.

Oh heck, the old folk farts strike again  I don't remember the track, but then again it does seem odd to call it trad if it's not one that's been around since Martin Carthy was a babe :)

Thanks for the warning, firehazard -- I shall have hair-trigger finger to jump the offending tracks

The track's on Freedom Fields. The story is that Seth reckons he heard it somewhere some time before, but couldn't remember exactly when, so thought he'd better describe it as "trad" to avoid anyone accusing him of stealing it... cue twisting of many folkie undergarments.

I can see his point. But boy, it doesn't half remind me of why I find a lot of trad folkies up their own back passages (if you'll forgive the sweeping generalisation!)

I know exactly what you mean (sometimes I think they must be related to the people who run English rugby ). And I love those moments at folk festivals (those with more, erm, "liberal" booking policies) when those same folkies start murmuring to each other and eventually get up and leave.

 Definite first cousins of the rugby old farts! And it reminds me why I stopped going to certain folk festivals . . .

Just got Rhino's Doo Wop Box for less than € 25. It's sad that this exciting music isn't taken very seriously, even by a lot of music aficionados.

I found Eliza Carthy's "Angels And Cigarettes" for six bucks at Fry's, so I couldn't resist that. I also pre-ordered Delorean's "You Can't Win" to fill a need for some low-key, pretty-yet-depressing-as-hell folk-ish music.

New York Dolls - Rock and Roll (Classic)
The Congos - Heart of the Congos (again with the classic)
Patty Griffin - Children Running Through (a bit disapointing)
