Villajohn will be happy to know i just picked up the cd editons of

The Wonderful Grand Band - 1978 self-titled debut & the 1981 follow-up "Living in a Fog".

While the production on "Fog" has not aged well, much of the the debut still sounds great, and the instrumentals on both are fantastic, and would not sound out of place on much later albums by bands like The Pogues. These Newfie cats were cutting edge!

Good man yerself,b'y!There is hope for you yet! I agree with you about Living in a Fog,that album was very much the soundtrack to the WGB TV series,shown on CBC in the eighties.I have all 4 dvds which feature the surviving 25 episodes of the 'Grand Band,there were more then 40 broadcast,what happened to the 'missing' episodes?There were a lot more songs not included on either of the albums,enough for a third album for sure.A mixture of comedy and music, most of it really good,considering it was probably a low budget production.I don't know if someone convinced Ron Hynes that he could dance like Mick Jagger,but i reckon Ron was a better mandolin player than Sir Mick.Some of the surviving members of the 'Grand Band recorded a new version of Babylon Mall,with Mark Critch replacing the late Tommy Sexton on lead vocal.I have seen it on Youtube.

Definitely a highlight of the album (along with "The Kerry Polka"). Will look for that Youtube clip. Love Mark Critch, and how appropriate it be him! It's amazing the straight line from WGB the band to WGB the show to Codco to This Hour Has 22 Minutes. I wonder how many folk bands have led to a string of successful comedy shows?

Low D, I have just viewed Babylon Mall 2017,once again! iI lost count the number of times i visited the Avalon Mall in St John's.Also featured in the video,Amelia Curran and Geraldine Hollett. Two great performers in their own right.Not forgetting Greg Malone,who along with Tommy Sexton were the resident comic performers in WGB as well as Mary Walsh and Cathy Jones.From Root Seller to Codco to 22 minutes, sing loud,sing proud Newfoundland!

His first solo album, interesting in it's mix of styles, being both what one might expect from him and also not. Notable to me for his backing band "Penguin", which is the legendary but seriously under-recorded Buffalo R 'n B band Stan & The Ravens (Stan Szeleste, Ernie Corallo, Sandy Konikoff), joined by Garland Jeffreys.

Not sure if it was recorded before or after, but Garland Jeffreys + Stan & The Ravens also recorded an album as "Grinder's Switch", also released in 1970. That one is next on my list...

Hadn't heard about this release, excited to hear it! A shame about his stroke a few years ago, I hear he's been singing some though.

Just got Blackie & the Rodeo Kings "Let's Frolic Again" (2007), which is as good as any of their albums AND has Garth Hudson on accordion on a couple and organ on a couple more, joined by latter-day band guitarist Jim Weider.
