57 track, 2-cd set that collects the bulk of Hawkins' classic material, and all of the stuff with future members of The Band, and some unreleased tracks - incl. three by "Levon & The Hawks" and three by Fred Carter Jr.

And great liner notes. Did you know a young Hawkins enlisted in the military, was assigned to "special services", and performed with a four-piece band of black musicians called - wait for it - "The Blackhawks"?! Always a class act, I have a soft spot for him b/c, as well as bringing The Band together, he used to host the New Year's concerts at Toronto City Hall. What could be better than watching, say, Platinum Blonde, and then have this aging crazy guy in a giant fur coat sing "Bo Diddly"? Warmed you right up, that did.

"Who Do You Love" is still a smokin' record all these years later. The Radiators considered it a Seminal Punk Moment.

It sure is (and another number he would pull out at those new year's eve shows outdoors at city hall). And it's one that's been recorded a hundred times, but - for my money - he's got the definitive version. Not only the most rocking version, it's downright spooky, too.

the logger-headed wagtails at Amazon sent my records and headphones to the town next to mine's post office, who in turn sent it back to Amazon.

Brussels Affair, the Rolling Stones, from Google Music. $4.99 !

This has LONG been considered one of the best live bootlegs ever, although the versions which circulated (Bedspring Symphony, etc) were mixtures of several shows. This is a combination of the two actual Brussels shows (afternoon and evening) recorded (without the Stones knowledge, according to Keith) on their mobile recording unit by Andy Johns and mixed by Bob Clearmountain and it sounds fookin' AWESOME.

Fans like me have long wished for the Stones to open their vaults...and to stop being such greedy a-holes. Releasing this for 5 bucks (and announcing that there will 5 or 6 more bootleg releases over the coming year) seem to indicate that I may be getting my wish. Here's hoping for a suitable last hurrah for their 50th anniversary next year!

Kate Rusby: While Mortals Sleep
The lovely Ms Rusby's new album featuring South Yorkshire versions of traditional Christmas songs. Just in case you're wondering, she doesn't include FoNY.
