As discussed in another thread, they make a big sound for a four-piece band. Good first album, wonder how they'll develop. Excellent live band they are.

I mentioned on another thread that Sigh No More is the itunes single of the week (UK store) and available for free download.

While in Portland to see a certain band this past weekend, i picked up (for $1!) a copy of The Brendan Voyage: an orchestral suite for uilleann pipes - played by Liam O'Flynn, composed by Shaun Davey, conducted by Noel Kelehan. Just finished listening to it, my 6 year old loves it. Good enuf review for me!

Also picked up the Elvis Costello 7" Complicated Shadows/Dirty Rotten Shame, prod. by T-Bone Burnett & featuring a fab all-star band (Denis Crouch, Stuart Duncan, Jim Lauderdale, Jerry Douglas, Mike Compton) (& T-Bone). My favourite Costello in years.

The new(est) one by Alejandro Escovedo, 2008's Real Animal with his usual band & produced by Tony Visconti. It's amazing, he really moves through & pays homage to different parts of his own musical history (punk, glam, etc) while still having a consistent sound on the record itself. And some great Beatles-esque backup singing on a few tracks. And I love the violin & cello always in his band. With the organ it's such a lush sound, without neccesairly dominating.

I adore Alejandro Escovedo.

I'm still bummed about True Believers and Rank & File though. True Believers was by all accounts one of the best live bands ever, but that posthumous compilation of their studio stuff is produced so poorly - it has that '80s drum sound all over the place, way too clean guitar lines, etc. The worst part is that those are great songs that would have been awesome live, but the production is so miserable and dated. Ditto Rank & File, which could have been, like, Lone Justice big if those albums were produced worth a damn.

I'm in the unusual position of having discovering Alejandro solo, first. Went to a gig in 1998 based on reputation & review, and was floored. I was indeed a bit disapointed when I tracked down some Rank & File. I mean, it was OK, but you're right - it sounded like it could have been so much better. Ever hear any live stuff? Maybe the opposite problem, everything rather loose. I'll have to see if i can track down any live True Believers.

Now The Nuns, they didn't have those same production problems...

Well damn, now i'm teasing myself. There is at least one FM recording in circulation, but I can't find anything active/archived anywhere (bit torrent world).

BTW, googling "True Believers FM" is not very helpful, unless you're intrest lies with Christian music...

I have a good friend who used to live in Austin and is good friends with Jon Dee Graham. I will check with him to see if Jon Dee has any live True Believers tracks. Maybe even something from their recent reunion shows. I'm just bummed as hell that Jon Dee is not doing his usual Wednesday night slot at the Continental Club this Wednesday as we had hoped to catch him right after The Pogues show at Stubb's. Turns out there is a benefit show there on Wednesday and Jon Dee will participate but I can't believe it will be as good as his previous shows we enjoyed there.
And I don't want no grave

And hope there's some soul left to save

Well isn't the internet amazing! I've already come up with it:

True Believers 1987-08-18 The Backroom, Austin, TX (FM)

At this point in time, the True Believers had recorded their 2nd LP (which, sadly, would go unreleased for years) and tear through most of its tunes, along with some of the usual covers ("Road Runner," "Foggy Notion," "Train Round The Bend," and "Pipeline") plus "Wimp" from Javier's band, the Zeros, and even a new original, "Put Me Down." Fantastic FM sound.
