You're a fine fellow.

Incidentally - the Kindle IS kinda cool though. A friend has one, so I've had a chance to play with it. The next version of it will be really pretty bitchin' if the first version is any indicator. Yeah, I like books and their content (the form, the smell, the archive, the artifact, etc). But as someone that flies a lot I also really appreciate compactness of content. I don't think the Kindle would ever replace books for me, but I DO think it would supplement them quite nicely. It would also be really valuable to me for things like periodicals (magazines and the like), newspapers, etc. I'm increasingly subscribing to magazines in electronic form rather than printed (searchable, archivable, etc - modern microfiche if you will), but had being tied to a computer to read them. Being able to load them onto a Kindle would be sweet.

But I'm rambling.

New albums ... new albums ...

I recently re-ripped Elvis Costello's "Brutal Youth" and EC+Brodsky Quartet's "The Juliet Letters". Somehow my prior rips had evaporated over a year ago, and I finally got around to re-adding them to the soup. So now they're like new. :)

Faustus: Faustus (Brilliant. Sort of medievalish sort of folkishness. Sort of. :D)

I just bought Elvis Costello's latest from iTunes. Haven't had the chance to listen to it yet, but I glanced at the .PDF that came with it. Being a guitarist myself, I love how they specify which guitars were used on each track!

I just bought The Rest Of The Best, and actually I don't like it much. I like all of the individual songs but it's disconcerting to hear them apart from the way they were presented in the original album. To me albums are usually like a painting, a picture of whatever frame of mind the band was in at that time, and to hear random songs picked out and lumped together kind of throws me off. I do think compilations work some of the time but I have to say this was not my most favorite one in the world.

No offense to anyone intended! :P

It's not terribly well mastered either. If I remember correctly, it also includes a rough mix of "London Girl" by mistake. Jesus, it was a different battle with the Brothers Warner every damn week in those days.

I just received a 7" in the mail, bought for a reasonable price (compared to the others i've seen & wildly lost in bidding) on the ebay. It's some motley, rag-tag collection of folks going by the name of Mighty Clouds of Dust.

Now i've just got to install a new cartridge in my turntable, which has stopped pumping audio to the left channel... Passed up a pristine copy of Poguetry in Motion 'cause i decided it was foolish to be buying vinyl when my turntable was on the fritz, and the $ would be better used thusly invested. Fortunately, the same shellac seller has a great deal on Pickering gear at the moment, from a closed-out distributer.

I did think it sounded a little tinny. Thought it was just me. Will listen more closely to London Girl now that I know it's a mistake!

I recently decided to start trying to replace some music from back in the day (when I bought tapes). Today I bought UB40's Geffery Morgan(On CD)....hard find but good stuff 8) This weekend I plan on replacing my virtually unplayable "Peace And Love" CD with the re-mastered version of from Rhino. I am looking forward to the bonus tracks, plus I always liked the way "White City" starts after "Gridlock" I find they sort of suit each other :D

In preparation for the Planet X reunion a week tommorrow I decided to get some of my goth albums on CD.

Today I picked up from the post office:

First and Last and Always by The Sisters of Mercy
Gods Own Medicine by The Mission (which I'm listening to now)
No Rest for the Wicked by New Model Army

I also have Love by The Cult on the way which will probably arrive on Monday while I'm at work :(

I'm now looking for some CD's by The Damned as I have none in my collection, any suggestions?

Hiya heather, going by what you say you are listening to at the moment ,i would recommend "Phantasmagoria" the damned charted in the uk with several songs taken from Phantasmagoria "The Shadow Of Love" and "Grimly Fiendish" and "Is It a Dream?" and around this time had the chart topper " Eloise " which is not on the lp but came out as a single on its own ,it was not what i wanted from the damned back then but i have grown to love it now a days... the newish one "grave disorder" is a cracker well worth splashing yer cash on,"The Black Album " has "curtain call" a 17:13 minute classic that really has to be heard at least once in a lifetime, a dark psychedelic vibe runs through the whole of side 1 and 2 and side 3 of the black album, and side 4 its alive one... highly recommended,"Machine Gun Etiquette" is one of the best party records ever. "Strawberries" is a good one to,that psychedelic madman vibe is all over this one as well and it has possibly the only tribute in rock n roll to thermal underwear :) , when it first came out the lp came with an insert lyric sheet that was soaked in strawberry scent ....very smelly in a groovey strawberry way! and the first 2..." Damned Damned Damned" with ..new rose ...neat neat neat... fan club... born to kill is one of my all time faves and "Music for Pleasure" is one of the first records i ever bought and i still play it 30  years later!! the only damned lps i do not have or have ever listened to are "Anything " and "Not of This Earth " every other release i would give a thumbs up to,

Thanks Slugz for your help, I remember Eloise got played quite a bit at Planet X at one point and also New Rose did too.

Anyway still not decided what to go for I may go for one of the compilation albums, see how I feel.

Anyone know of Jonathan Coulton, musician and computer geek? I bought his "Code Monkey," a great song with super lyrics. He's a fascinating guy and has albums at his site to buy or download. Some of his songs are poignant, some funny, some both.

Also, the instrumental section that ends Turkish Song of the Damned sounds vastly different to the album version.
