Because my cherubs destroyed my last copy for the pretty picture on the disc, I re-purchased Steve Earle's "El Corazon".
Did the old songs taunt or cheer you, and did they still make you cry?

I haven't been indulging my 78 rpm habit much lately, but I just won an auction for Dr. Clayton's classic from 1942, "Pearl Harbor Blues".

Dr. Clayton is someone I didn't know about until I started collecting 78s. He died in the 40s, before any of the subsequent blues booms. I discovered that he wrote "Cheatin' & Lyin' Blues" ("I'm gonna murder my baby/if she don't stop cheatin' & lyin' / I'd rather be in the penitentiary / than to be worried out of my mind" ) which I fell in love with when I saw the film of Robert Nighthawk performing it in the fantastic Maxwell Street documentary "And This Is Free". Now I have a half-dozen of the Doctor's 78s. He was usually accompanied by Sunnyland Slim (aka "Dr. Clayton's Buddy") on piano, and one of the records I have features Ransom Knowling on tuba.

The mailman brought me:

Memphis Minnie - Daybreak Blues / Million Dollar Blues

A DJ-only 78 in really nice condition. Minnie with her 2nd husband
Little Son Joe (Ernest Lawlers), piano and string bass.

Woo, soon daybreak in the morning, I'm gonna take the dirt road home
'Cause these Blue Monday blues is 'bout to kill me, sure as you're born

Well, this man pitches a party, every first of the week
I can't cross the floor for other people's feet
Come daybreak in the morning, I'm gonna take the dirt road home

Well, I went to my kitchen, intendin' to eat a bite
The table was crowded from morning till night
Come daybreak in the morning, I'm gonna take the dirt road home

(spoken:
All right, Little Son Joe
Yes, I know, keep on playing
I'll come home)

Hey, now I turned around, aimed to go to bed
There's four at the foot and six at the head
Come daybreak in the morning, I'm gonna take the dirt road home

Haven't heard Johan's opinion on it yet, but I'd highly recommend it myself. Mr Cave on great form. Dark and dirty and bluesy and sort of Birthday-Partyesque.

Thanks Firehazard.
Has Sting planted any Police re-union tour tickets in your house?

I was given a free ticket with my purchases at Woolworth's checkout in Stratford-Upon-Avon today. The blurb says "Free Entry To UK'S Top Attractions", but I'm not so easily fooled. I binned it.

I've only just seen this.
