I read that when I was researching the record. I'll have to check that out. He was in the Soft Machine, wasn't he? I'm afraid I'm completely oblivious to his stuff.

He's an exceptionally talented man. Almost all his solo albums are worth hearing. He is often characterised as a jazz singer/musician but he's so much more than that. Check out his versions of Elvis Costello's "Shipbuilding", Billie Holliday's "Strange Fruit" and Chic's "Free".

Finally acquired that Rogue's Gallery album. Some good stuff on there... some disappointments.

And that damn Sting has now inveigled his way into my cd collection.

Has anyone bought the Billy Bragg album Must I Paint You a Picture? The Essential BB?

I have Mermaid Ave 1 and 2 but his show in LA is coming up soon and I wanted to see if anyone thinks I should get this album or not? Usually I wouldn't ask and just get it....but it's 35$ ouch!!

It's a great collection, Georgecat. Worth the pennies, IMHO. :D

My 78 collection branched out into Jazz last night - bought a lot of 18 78s, mainly because there were two Billie Holiday records, including the bone-chilling original version of "Strange Fruit". But there were also four Charlie Parker records, and Cootie Williams with Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson on vocals doing "'Round Midnight", and a bunch of other cool stuff.

Billie Holiday is one of my favorites of all time. An exquisite singer.

It's well worth getting, georgecat - the first of the cds, especially, has some real classic tracks. Though the price you quote is expensive... I paid much less for it!
