Book of Songs for Anne Marie - Baby Dee

This is a mixture of vaudeville-blues-soul. I've been enjoying it a lot!

Transcontinental Hustle by Gogol Bordello

On the first few listens it seems a lot softer and possibly a bit overproduced. This is their first produced by Rick Rubin, and I don't really know. The man has produced some really tremendous albums, but this one is just a bit lacking. Sergei still comes through with some brilliant biting strings, but overall I would say that the band sounds a bit mechanical ... a bit sterile. Maybe even session-musician-like (no offense to any session musicians out there).

On the other hand I think it may grow on me as I hear the songs more. I still have a hard time wrapping my brain around Gogol Bordello disappointing me in any way. I'm going to listen to it more and really try harder to find that spark in it.

Hi Sportin'. Wanted to post about this record also and found your post after searching where..
I think the record is oke. Like "when universes collide" for example. Still have to grow into it though.. (if that will happen)
What I was wondering is what (all of) you think the influence of Rubin is on this recording?

"Far From Home" by Dingle Spike. Sought it out b/c it has Tom McManamon on it (all beardless & short haired on the cover). I was surprised to see the band was also sporting one James Nally (apparantly his pre -"Mac" days) on accordion, keys & whistles. I have to say I'm not a fan of the vocals, but the instrumentals are the sort of astounding, high-octane workouts I was expecting. He really was the best tenor banjo player this side of Barney McKenna.

Think the late Tom McManamon [The Beast ] R.I.P. looks alot like Lovejoy on the lp cover .

My daughter always thought he looked hilarous in The Popes, what with that mass of wair jiggling, and his beard. But she just cracked up when I pointed at him in the cover of this album.
