On the first few listens it seems a lot softer and possibly a bit overproduced. This is their first produced by Rick Rubin, and I don't really know. The man has produced some really tremendous albums, but this one is just a bit lacking. Sergei still comes through with some brilliant biting strings, but overall I would say that the band sounds a bit mechanical ... a bit sterile. Maybe even session-musician-like (no offense to any session musicians out there).
On the other hand I think it may grow on me as I hear the songs more. I still have a hard time wrapping my brain around Gogol Bordello disappointing me in any way. I'm going to listen to it more and really try harder to find that spark in it.
Low D wrote:"Far From Home" by Dingle Spike. Sought it out b/c it has Tom McManamon on it (all beardless & short haired on the cover). I was surprised to see the band was also sporting one James Nally (apparantly his pre -"Mac" days) on accordion, keys & whistles. I have to say I'm not a fan of the vocals, but the instrumentals are the sort of astounding, high-octane workouts I was expecting. He really was the best tenor banjo player this side of Barney McKenna.
