Perline Ellison, Decca 78, "New That Ain't Right"/"Razor Totin' Mama" .

A pleasant find on EBay..bought it strictly for the song titles, and the lady's name. She was evidently a second-string blues shouter - no shame in that, she's just not as widely remembered as Bessie Smith. Good nasty 40's piano blues.

This sounds considerably better on the Japan-only CD released a couple of years ago. It´s not strictly an album, of course, more a 5-track EP.

But vinyl is so nice, and large, and i got it for a steal, even with shipping! My children thought it was a bit strange, but to be fair Brecht/Weill's music is a bit weird, even for cabaret. I enjoyed it, though. But then, i have friends who act in plays/perform music by them, and some of them were about 22 at the time they attempted it too. So perhaps i'm more the intended audience than, say, a 10 year old girl who likes swing.

I just picked up a copy of Bedlam Ballroom (2000) by Squirrel Nut Zippers. A bit of a "Mark II" version of the band, it's actually quite mellow compared to some of their albums, and there's a lot of flamenco guitar going on, and other latin-ish influences. While nothing has jumped out, grabbed me by the throat and banged my head against the wall like their "Ghost of Stephen Foster" did, i think i'm loving it. Exciting to hear new (to me) music by a band i loved so much. The presence of Andrew Bird on violin makes any album a safe buy.

Following on the heels of my last ebay victory, and feelling all cabaret-ish, i've just got me a copy of Agnes Bernelle's Father's Lying Dead On the Ironing Board, "near-mint" LP for a cool $20.50 (Canadian), incl. shipping.

I always feel I should remind people that this album plays at 45rpm, so consider yourself unnecessarily reminded. Enjoy!

Hey! Me too. Apart from the magnificent title track it includes the song from The Wrestler, shamefully overlooked by Oscar.

A song that would be worthy of at least a nomination in any year. Hard to understand how it didn't get one.

So how did it get a Golden Globe award and then NOT get an Oscar nom??? Am I missing something?

Because these guys are local, check out The Dutchess a the Duke. If you like the stripped down, lo-fi sound of the early Rolling Stones you'll enjoy the folk rock of these guys from Seattle. The subject matter is very honest and gritty as well.

Me three! I'm not the biggest fan, Tom Joad, Seeger Sessions are my 2 fave albums but I loved Magic and took a punt.

I really like the bonus tune, "A Night With the Jersey Devil" - a very Tom Waits / Cramps sounding piece
I wish I'd done biology for an urge within me wanted to do it then

Just bought "El amor de mi vida" by Ronnie Drew & Eleanor Shanley. Hard to find, finally got it through amazon marketplace for about 20 €. But it´s really worth it, great covers from Warren Zevon (the tile track), Tom Waits ("Ang down your head"), Bob Dylan ("Farewell"), the traditional "The ballad of Henry Lee" plus others.

Interesting, maybe i should file it with my 9 & 10" records that play at 33 1/3, not 78... or i guess it's just a longer 12" innit? Any particular reason for the 45?
