Just re-bought Red Roses for Me. Lost my entire CD collection in the divorce, so I have to replace it. Started with the important stuff...

Sorry to hear the sad news, Treadhead. It gets easier eventually...

Colin Meloy - Colin Meloy Sings Live!
Emmylou Harris - Blue Kentucky Girl (remastered)
Gaelic Storm - What's The Rumpus? (their best yet, in my opinion)
The Be Good Tanyas - Blue Horse

Celebrated my birthday the other day by hittin' the used shop...

From Here to Eternity - Live by The Clash
Magic Hour Sailor Songs by C.R. Avery
La Llorana by Lhasa
and made an ebay purchase of a - no doubt bootleg - NTSC DVD copy of
The Dubliners 25th Birthday - The Late Late Show Tribute 1987

To top it all off, i received in the mail the day before my ebay purchase of
Bird of Prayer by Storm (Tom McManamon & James McNally)

Not a bad haul, overall. Happy birthday to me, indeed!

Yes, he also wrote "Angel Of The Morning" and had a quite successful career as a cut-above Country perfomer in more recent years. He is the brother of Bush-lovin' actor Jon Voight, which also makes him the uncle of actress Angelina Jolie.

The Raven label, out of Australia, appears to specialize in this brand of late 60s/early 70s American performer, guys who invariably had a song covered by Elvis Presley at some stage.

On The Waiting List Dave Sutherland (Red Kite RKRCD011)

This is actually the fourth album from this guy. I came by his previous one, American Refrigerator (2002) when he pelted me with it from the moshpit at a Pogues gig. One of the many perks/perils of being in The Pogues is the fact that so many people who come to see us are themselves musicians, so it is not in itself unusual to get pelted by CDs but, inevitably, not all of them make it any further than the stage floor - we're there to work, not keep house - but I picked this one up and later, I even played it. In time, I sent a note to Dave Sutherland telling him how much I enjoyed the album.

Consequently, On The Waiting List arrived, more conventionally, by regular mail in July and a fine record it is too. Good country music comes less and less from Nashville of course, so it is fitting that Dave's album should come from South London via Wales. He is respectful of, but not enslaved to, the idiom, and what really matters to him are the songs, all his own here except for a single Townes Van Zandt cover. "When Tomorrow Comes" is a real standout, a song about a guy returning home after two years away in a "hell hole" (maybe prison, maybe a battlefield) and trying to re-adjust to his previous life. Dave's affecting vocal is complimented by backing singer Siobhan Parr in a way that recalls, and is worthy of, Gram Parsons with Emmylou Harris. The other standout track is the plaintive "You Got A Man Like Me Loving You" on which Sutherland is accompanied only by the solitary barroom piano of Gunnar Frick, who elsewhere makes a strong overall contribution to Sutherland's excellent and economical band. Again, it is meant as nothing but a compliment that the song is worthy of Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham and it is no surprise to learn from his website that people like Willie Nelson are interested in Dave Sutherland's songs.

Dave is, by the way, a registered Medusan, showing that Barack Obama does not have it all his own way when it comes to "elites"! I believe he merits your investigation and your support and has some UK gigs in October.

Thanks Dave.

December Looms - John Mann. John is the the frontman for Spirit of the West, a great Canadian Celtic band. December Looms was released in late 2007, and is a fantastic piece of work. We are on a house concert circuit here and were lucky enough to have John perform here at our house last Friday. He put on a brilliant, brilliant show. Quite a night. And a great record. Definitely worth seeking out.

Drever, McCusker, Woomble: Before The Ruin. Nice, gentle, laid-back album, with at least a couple of really good songs. Though I find myself wishing they'd give it a bit more oomph occasionally.

Bellowhead: Matachin. Excellent, dark and occasionally very rude big-band folk.

Damien Dempsey: The Rocky Road. Which is mostly fine, but I think Damo's version of A Rainy Night In Soho is dire.

Noah & The Whale: Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down. Which actually I really like.
Likes the warm feeling but is tired of all the dehydration.

Invictus: Soul Box Set Various Artists (Castle Records 3-CD box set)

OK, so I'm a fucken luddite, but at least I'm happy.

In 1970, the Invictus label, Holland-Dozier-Holland's splinter label put the fear of God into the parent Tamla Motown by starting out with Freda Payne's stunning "Band Of Gold" and just getting better and better after that. Just about everything that matters from the label's 7 year history (and that of the sister Hot Wax label) is here on this box - Bring The Boys Home, Want Ads, Westbound #9, Deeper and Deeper, Give Me Just A Little More Time, Working on a Building of Love, Women's Love Rights, Elmo James, One Monkey Don't Stop No Show, I'm On My Way To A Better Place, Somebody's Been Sleeping In My Bed, Patches, Love Factory, Everything's Tuesday, You've Got Me Dangling On A String, While You're Out Looking For Sugar, Chairman Of The Board, Unhooked Generation................they're all here, along with plenty of other tunes ripe for (re)discovery. This is Desert Island stuff.

Aah! Wonderful stuff. Invictus and Hot Wax never put a foot wrong for me. You've Got to Crawl - 8th Day and You Made Me Over - Melvin Davis were the best of the tunes that I hadn't heard prior to the release of the Invictus Unconquered CDs.

I am in the process of buying, one at a time, the wallet crippling Complete Motown Singles Box Sets. I have volumes 1-6 and am struggling to convince myself I should stop; when I know that in reality I am going right on to 1975
