No, dawson, the Mississippi is safely over the hills from my place. This site is a diversion from the news, thoughts and worry about my friends and family who are not so fortunate.

Pet Sounds Live - Brian Wilson

Now this is a piece of work Shane could really sink his teeth into...

And hope there's some soul left to save

Heartattack and Vine - Tom Waits. Genius.

And, on Mr. C's recommendation - Black Water, Kris Drever. Great record.

Little Richard

Post Sat Jun 21, 2008 10:57 pm

MAJOR addition to the 78 collection: Reddy Teddy and
Rip It Up by Little Richard on Specialty Records.
The label on the B-side is goobered up so I got it for ten
bucks - it plays great, though, and rocks like MAD.

Image
This record's just about the same age I am.
WHAT, I always wonder, did America think
about Little Richard in 1956? He sounds like
he's going to have a stroke in Ready Teddy.
Image
Specialty was one of those labels which had a definite sound -
like Chess & Sun, like Excello and Motown. All Specialty records sound
like they were recorded in the same room and probably were.
Exactly the same amount of warmth and presence here as in
my Lloyd Price 78s.

Anyway, I'm really excited to have a Little Richard 78, especially
this one. Richard's 78s usually bring a bit more than I'm willing to
pay.

Congratulations on your find, O'Blivion!

I have a cassette tape w/Little Richard's rendition of Itsy Bitsy Spider. I played it for my kindergartners one rainy day and they were so enamored of it that it became a Friday midmorning tradition to stop our work and dance wildly to the song. One day toward the schoolyear's end, one of the kids said, "I wonder how little Little Richard IS anyhow?" It hadn't occurred to me that in their literal kindergarten minds they were envisioning a tiny man as the performer. I put that notion to rest when I presented them w/a photo I found online. The kids were stunned, and rather disappointed, that he looked nothing like they'd thought.

Well, Richard IS stunning. Whether it's the
look he sports now, with a Phyllis Diller wig and
pancake makeup,

Image
or his mid-70s angel-dust drag,

Image
his original "architect of rock & roll" persona,

Image
or somewhere in between,

Image
on the gospel train or off,

Richard has ALWAYS been stunning.

Last night's eBay find: an NOS
(new old stock, in other words
a brand-new 1947 record) copy
of Hawkshaw Hawkins'
"When They Found The Atomic Power".
Written by the Louvin Brothers
(who also did "Satan Is Real"), it
is described thusly:
Image
...a rather heavy-handed song
that claims the atomic bomb
as an American birthright ("In
that zero hour seeking out
some heavenly power while
the Star Spangled Banner was
being played") and one that
was issued by divine providence.
It should be noted that the tune's
treatment of the Oak Ridge scientists
as folk heroes was in keeping with
their treatment in the media of the
day. It was the scientists, after all,
who saved our boys from a Japanese
invasion. One could argue that the
Manhattan Project was the ultimate
redemption of the egghead (with a
strong assist from the Almighty, of
course).

Yes, that's very similar to the one I showed them.

I just bought the new WEEZER CD - Red Album

Have to say that it's not a typical Weezer Album, just 2 or 3 great old-school Weezer songs on it, many (too) slow songs as I think..... :?

Just ordered the new SUBWAYS Album, hopefully it's a bit like their first Album which I really love :!:

Not bought, but given. I started listening to the "Celt In A Twist" podcast out of Vancouver, and I sent my compliments on the show to the program director. They responded by sending me 4 CDs in the mail, with the proviso that I spread the word on the show. So, everyone should subscribe to this podcast and check out some fine Celtic rock music from Canada and beyond.

My loot:
Capercaillie - Roses and Tears
Lunasa - The Story So Far
Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill - Welcome Here Again
Mozaik (feat. Andy Irvine & Donal Lunny) - Changing Trains

Yep, love the Gutter Twins album. I pre-ordered the Box Set back in April, but have yet to receive it.

Today arrived Damien Dempsey's "The Rocky Road". I'm halfway through it. Listening to the acoustic set is kind of like listening to Warren Zevon's or Steve Earle's acoustic albums for the first time after nothing but the R&R sets -- it's blowing me away.

Nice cover of "Rainy Night in Soho" on this one.
And the version of "The Foggy Dew" is the best one I own.

And now, at the end of it, I feel like I'm under the influence of something
wonderful
