Yep,it sure sounds like Ronnie Drew or someone doing a darn good impression.Philip and Terry told more on more than one occasion of the time they toured Canada with The Mahones....did anyone see them in Nova Scotia or Newfoundland? I saw the Mahones in O'Reilly's ,St John's in June 2018.....a memorable gig....i filmed some of it.....i must have been one of the last to leave OReilly's at Stupid o'clock in the morning!I like the Mary Wallopers álbum, though it reminds me of other bands from down the years.Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice was recorded by Hamish Imlach and was promptly banned by BBC Scotland.

Cracking stuff.

Me too! Yes indeed. Absolutely splendid. Glad I bought tickets for their Manchester gig before they got featured in the Grauniad. It'll be full of hipsters...:D

Enjoy! Yes, the tofu-eating wokerati will doubtless be there too. So it should be a great night.

They played in Cambridge last night. Missed it, as it was in a venue I can't currently get into, and getting me anywhere is increasingly complicated these days. Feck.

That's miserable. Really sorry to hear it. Feck indeed.

It'll be a test of the mettle of the wokerati if the wallopers do their version of God Bless England. :D

Thanks. It's all just part of the Unbearable Shiteness of Being.

Latest acquisition:

Eliza Carthy and the Restitution Band: Queen of the Whirl

Supposed to be seeing them in a couple of weeks. An actual real-life gig, all being well.

A little while back I found myself wondering about whether Afro Celt Sound System was doing anything any longer. I mean, it was world wankery before (very much of the "the kind of thing you'll like if you like that kind of thing" world), and then I somehow thought they went away. Turns out they're still releasing stuff though, so I acquired:

Capture: Chorus (2010)
The Source (2016)
Flight (2018)

So far none of these have really grabbed me. More vocals (or so it seems to me), less ... I dunno. Hard to explain. It just feels more "At 3:00 on the Merlot stage..." festival fair than it did before (which was still very much festival fair, but more of "At 6:00 on the Zin stage..."). So far sitting pretty squarely in "2 of 5 stars" territory.

I thought i remembered something about them breaking up, but wiki tells me it was a split in 2016 and there were briefly two versions of the group in existence, Simon Emmerson vs. James McNally & Martin Russell. Apparently Emmerson won / bought out / otherwise secured the rights to the name. T so that might be the difference in the recent albums.

Huh. Well, there it is then.

They played main stage at the Cambridge Folk Festival back in the summer of this year. I didn't go to see them, we were probably checking out some other act on a different stage at the time. Or we were at the bar. Or chilling out by the duckpond. Or something. I've never really got them, even back in the day when I vaguely thought I should've.

Dusty Sings Soul - Dusty Springfield

A superb new compilation by those lovely people at Ace Records which pulls together rarities, b sides and album only tracks. It plainly demonstrate that Dusty was the UK's greatest ever female vocalist.

Look Again To The Wind: Johnny Cash's Bitter Tears Revisited (2014)

A various-artists tribute to the 1964 Johnny Cash album. A worthy musical update to a bunch of songs that have tragically not dated. With David Rawlings, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Nancy Blake, Kris Kristofferson, Joey Ryan, Kenneth Pattengale, Bill Miller, and a bunch of great string players like Sam Bush and Greg Leisz.

On a related note, did you know Pete La Farge, author of 8 of these tracks - including the folk standards Ira Hayes and As Long As The Grass Shall Go - was a pretendian? I sure didn't.

Music for Our Lady Queen of the Angels - Garth Hudson (2005 remastered CD)

It's everything you'd think a Garth Hudson album would be - choirs of angels playing in outer space, by turns haunting and bombastic, places where you don't know if you're hearing voices, pedal steel, or keyboards (in fact all three are present). A magnificent work done on a mix of vintage and cutting edge (for 1980) equipment. Oh, and Ray Bradbury wrote a poem for it and it's read by Charlton Heston.

Originally a soundscape recorded for a "celebrational environment" created by sculptor Tony Duquette in honour of the 200th anniversary of Los Angeles, this was released on a cassette only available at the 1980-1981 event, with all remaining stock destroyed later in fire (Garth's second major fire, I think). Fortunately, in a miracle worthy of the basement tapes, something survived and was restored by the great Peter J. Moore and the album was finally made widely available on a CD released 25 years later.

You can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uXUVhDw7ZQ&t=2084s
