Rounding out my Willie p. Bennett collection, i've just recieved a copy of his 1993 album, "Take My Own Advice". Very country, like his 85 album (as opposed to the country/bluegrass of his early work), but excellent, like all his work. Features Colin Linden on guitar.

Sorry FH work grabbed me and I couldn't get free....

I've probably listened all the way through twice but my highlights and first impressions....
He's still a tad depressed but more rocking than anything he's done in years.
"We take care of our own" is the anthem of the disk, nice rocker
"Death to my hometown" in the early running for my fav tune. Has quite a celtic tinge to it don't you think?
"Wrecking Ball" written for the last shows at Giants stadium before they tore her down. (my heads in there about 6-7 deep from the stage in the video)
"Rocky Ground" starts off swell but that rap he injected ain't really my cup o tea.
"Land of hopes and dreams" finally made it to a disc. He's been playing this live mainly as an encore for years now. Love the studio version. Sometimes live it seems like filler as it goes on for 20 mins or more.
My disk has "bonus tracks" Swallowed Up" and "American Land"
"Swallowed Up" is dark, haven't read the lyrics but it's no party tune
"American Land" alwayd nice to hear Bruces take on Sally Mac!

What do you think of it so far?

If you say so. 8)

I only spent $1.50 at the Salvation Army for the records and got a pretty Mid-Century glass to boot.

Satan Is Real The Louvin Brothers

Someone who knows how please upload the cover. Incidentally, it also graces the new Charlie Louvin memoir of the same title!

Philip, you just click on the Img button thingy and paste the image code inside.
Now, I don't know how some people post actual video players. That takes smarts. 8)

A rather belated set of thoughts, NJR.

It's taken a while to get into this album, but it's grown on me now. Despite the undoubted bitterness of some of the songs (the lyrics need a careful listen), in its way it's affirming. Bruce is obviously (and rightly) feeling anger at the state of things in his country, with the current situation caused, basically, by the failures of Western capitalist society. It's a feeling shared by some of us over here as we struggle under the government of the US president's new best chum Cameron and his similarly privileged cronies.

Musically, it's interesting how the album touches on a whole range of styles and influences, from Celtic to Gospel. At times it feels more like a Seeger Sessions than E Street Band album. There are a few stand-out tracks: We Take Care Of Our Own will be a stunning set opener, Death To My Hometown, Wrecking Ball. Jack of All Trades sort of lulls you into a false sense of what it is until you hit the "If I had a gun..." line. And a couple of weak tracks, in my opinion, particularly You've Got It, which hold it back from being a great album.

A number of people over here have been remarking how Death To My Hometown sounds like The Pogues. It doesn't. It just has whistle on it and yes, a Celtic tinge. American Land, on the other hand, as previously documented, has that Sally Mac thing about it.

Have not bought this one yet but after listening to the first 2 tracks, I am about to...

Neko Case was remarking on twitter that she wouldn't play with Charlie Louvin because he was a sexist and hated black people. Found that disappointing.

I have received my pre-order of the new Popes disc, "New Church". Only had a chance to listen to about half, "Alice" is the winner so far.

Well, I haven't bought it so much as picked up a finished copy from the Ace Records warehouse in Harlesden.

Well all i keep getting are delay notices from Amazon (who don't seem to know that the release date was pushed back, but just that they're having problems finding it or something).
