I've just bought "The Lucky Ones", Willie P. Bennett's only album from the '80s (1985). It is, for some reason, available from the iTunes store - the only album of his available on line.

This is my first ever digital purchase, i had some gift cards from my bday. I also see mp3s for defunct Toronto band "Wind May Do Damage", for the cassette i have. My cassette player has died, so i think i'll get that too. And the system seems to have stolen 1 of my 3 gift cards, so now i'm convinced that this is a scam.

(Hey, they censored a certain album title - it's spelled "Rum, S****y & the Lash" on the iTunes store! That's hilarious).

Nice. I haven't listened to Rancid in a while but they'll always be awesome.

I just got:
Queens Of The Stone Age "Era Vulgaris"
&
PJ Harvey "Stories From the City, Stories From The Sea"

Bad As Me Tom Waits (Anti, 2011)

If you break open a song, you’ll find the eggs of other songs. Misunderstandings are really kind of an epidemic and acceptable. I think it’s about one thing, but someone else will say, ‘That song is kind of a rhino in hot pants on a burnt rocking horse with a lariat shouting, “Repent, repent!” ’ I think that’s great.

I’m always looking for sounds that are pleasing at the time. The sound of a helicopter is really annoying until you’re drowning, and it’s there to rescue you. Then it sounds like music.

Tom Waits interview, The New Yorker, October 31

That Keith Richards and Tom Waits "get" each other is perhaps the only evidence required to acclaim their respective greatness. The terrific new Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan album also welcomes back my old pal Augie Meyers on Accordion, Piano and Wurlitzer and Marc Ribot and Casey Waits too. Go! Buy!

I always thought Keith's song "Wicked As It Seems" coulda been a Tom Waits song.

Bought and listened to. I like the new album, and something of a fresh sound to some degree for ol' Tom. His vocal stylings take a lot from his little buddy Chuck E. Weiss this time around, and there were a few times I swore it was Chuck singing. I just have to admit I'm not fond of Chuck E. Weiss' vocal stylings (a man Tom Waits described as "the kind of guy who would steal his own car), so that is the only hurdle I've found with this album. The lyrics are great, by the way. Much more honed than his efforts of late.

I love it - it's obviously a deliberately "commercial" Waits album, though I had a chuckle as I typed that word. Let's call it "fan-friendly" instead.

Highlights: "Satisfied", "New Year's Eve", "Hell Broke Luce", "Last Leaf" duet with Keef, "Pay Me".

Tom Waits - Bad as Me: ditto all of the above!

Joe West - Aberdeen, S.D.: produced by one of our raft mates, it received a nice review in The Telegraph.

There are a few autographed Joe West CDs left. Buy one at http://www.babyblackpanda.com and let me know that you placed an order and I will see you get one that was signed. Don't let that 666 PO Box number scare you... Also, Joe just released this on cassette tape if your into that kind of thing.

I just bought the Rads vinyl LP, Trouble Pilgrim.

Ronnie Hawkins & The Hawks - "The Roulette Years".

57 track, 2-cd set that collects the bulk of Hawkins' classic material, and all of the stuff with future members of The Band, and some unreleased tracks - incl. three by "Levon & The Hawks" and three by Fred Carter Jr.

And great liner notes. Did you know a young Hawkins enlisted in the military, was assigned to "special services", and performed with a four-piece band of black musicians called - wait for it - "The Blackhawks"?! Always a class act, I have a soft spot for him b/c, as well as bringing The Band together, he used to host the New Year's concerts at Toronto City Hall. What could be better than watching, say, Platinum Blonde, and then have this aging crazy guy in a giant fur coat sing "Bo Diddly"? Warmed you right up, that did.
