I received Amon Amarth's "Surtur Rising" for my birthday (as per my request)
I feel the need to share the album cover with you:

Mànran, first album by the band of the same name. Young Scottish folkies, I rather liked them when catching them live this summer on more than one occasion. They sing in both Gaelic and English. Not necessarily at the same time.

I caught them live two weeks ago and enjoyed the gig - they are a fun bunch. (Here is a handful of pics I shot.) It was fun too when they tried to persuade the Czech audience to sing along some Gaelic choruses, and people seemed to doubt that the unfamiliar sounds are a human language. :)
Is their album as good as the live gigs?

I need to give it a few more listens, but I suspect it doesn't quite catch the fun of the live show. Which is true of many bands, I guess. But I'm still liking it, and them. 8)

Nice pics, Z. And rather better than mine, which are here:

Thanks, I definitely enjoyed browsing them and refreshing my memories! Though the Manran lineup seems a bit unfamiliar. Do they change it from show to show? Variety is the spice of life... :)

As far as I know, the Mànran line-up is pretty much the same. But the photos there were from a variety of sets of theirs we saw during the festival weekend. And some were taken in the Saturday session, when many of the acts performing ooover the weekend take to the stage and often perform together. So also in some of the Mànran pics are the lovely Abigail Washburn, brilliant American clawhammer banjo player, and her collaborator Kai Welch (the bearded guy in the denim jacket). The fiddle player in the red plaid shirt I didn't catch the name of, but it was claimed he was in Mumford & Sons (though I have to say I've never noticed him when I've seen them).

The Saturday session always ends up with most of those who've taken part in it jamming onstage together. It's worth seeing, if only to wonder how the stage doesn't collapse under the weight.

(This pic also includes most of Irish band Danú, along with various others.)

Actually, i'm wondering if anybody can reccomend something for me. Is there a good collection from the early Sun Records days? I'm thinking something that mixes the big three, and others too would be fine. There's plenty of collections of Elvis' Sun years, Cash's, etc, but i thought a mix would be good.

There's so much Sun records stuff out there, I think i might be leaning towards the Rhino one:

That is a particularly good collection, I understand. Besides, Rhino can usually be trusted.

The Brock Maguire Band Green Grass Blue Grass (Own label)

A big glorious rumble between Ennis, Co Clare neo-ceili and Appalachian claw hammer, and a complete delight from start to finish. The melodeon, fiddle, banjo and piano of Brock Maguire brushes up against the America counterpart stylings of Ricky Scaggs, Jeff Taylor and friends in various inspired configurations recorded chez Scaggs in Tennessee.

Might be tricky to track down in record stores, but I got mine from Claddagh Records mail order in Dublin.

June Tabor and the Oysterband: Ragged Kingdom. Is it really 20 years since they collaborated on Freedom and Rain? Erk!

So what do you reckon to the new album, Shaz? Still haven't decided whether to buy it...

Not at all trying to impress any one particular here but I just to happen to puchase the 7 inchers of both Faithful Departed credited as Philip Chevron with pic sleeve and The Radiators Kitty Ricketts with pic sleeve on ebay earlier this week. This brings me pretty darn close to a full completion of all things Pogues(related) vinyl collection, which has been lifelong labor of love. Can't wait to hear them raindrops!
