Levi was "mentally ill", however you choose to think about it, and was confronted by six cops on an island where he was camping, far from anywhere or anyone. They were investigating a boat theft. Guess what? He reacted no doubt reacted badly to their presence and - despite being alone, unarmed, and clearly crazy - was shot dead. And the pigs got out of even being properly investigated.

I remember hearing this on the news, but the name wasn't released at the time. And my exact thought was "Damn, probably some poor messed-up bastard just trying to find some solace in the woods, sort himself out".

What a fucking waste and a fucking crime. Fuck you Ontario Provincial Police.

11 years ago today.

After the killing, the officers conspired via lawyer before writing their notes, so the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) had no usable evidence. When the SIU complained publicly, the Commissioner of the OPP - a position appointed by Ontario's premier - criticized them. The Ontario Provincial government? They did nothing.

A great human rights lawyer took this case on, supporting Levi's mother & helped by a small group of activists. They won - the police union appealed, and lost again. They fought it all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, where in December of 2013, the pigs lost again. So while there will never be any justice for Levi, the cops have lost a single tool of their oppression, and a group of citizens was able to find a small amount of accountability where the state was unable (SIU) and unwilling (Police Commissioner).

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
― Margaret Mead

I miss The Colbert Report.
I miss Late Show with David Letterman

Late Show with Stephen Colbert isn’t something I seek out.

The one taping of Report I saw was an unannounced double Winter Olympics one with a lot of interviews via satellite. All the athletes were still in Canada as the Olympics (usually) go on forever and ever. :)

He’s amazing.
I’ve seen Oprah and Letterman in person and they suck when not being taped, Colbert is hysterical.
Oprah seems awful.

We went to Oprah at the Kodak (Dolby) Theatre after the Oscars just to sell the goodie bags on eBay.
There were no goodie bags.
Letterman’s just professional and somewhat removed.
