Media are reporting that Tom Petty (66), has suffered a massive heart attack and has been taken off life support, although LAPD are not confirming he has passed Into The Great Wide Open. Guardian are now reporting he's in hospital, "gravely ill", his daughter has been on instragram saying "he's not dead yet!", seems like he Won't Back Down.

Canadian actor John Dunsworth, best known & loved as the Trailer Park Boys' Mr. Lahey, dead at 71, after a "sudden and unexpected illness".

Also, 2017's entire generation of chicks from an Adelie penguin colony in the eastern Antarctic, of which one researcher said: "It's like`Tarantino does Happy Feet', with dead penguin chicks strewn across a beach in Adelie Land."

Sad day for Canada. Being a hockey guy, Downie was a favorite, writing songs about the tragic death of Bill Barilko (scored the Stanley Cup winning goal for Toronto and then was killed in an off-season plane crash) and being the godson of Harry Sinden.

I know others have posted on the forum about separating young First Nation children from their families. Downie did a lot of work on this issue. I actually just watched the Last of the Mohicans (Daniel Day Lewis-1990s) and the actor who played Uncas was one of those affected-pretty tragic.

It's true, Downie & his band, The Tragically Hip, loom large on our cultural landscape. Recent national moves by our shiny happy Prime Minister towards reconciliation with our First Nations coincided with Downie's campaign, and PM Trudeau - who was a big fan - actually cried when making a public statement about Downie's death.

Meanwhile, the Murdered & Missing Indigenous Women & Girls (MMIWG) Inquiry is basically grinding to a halt from mis-management, so it would be nice if he put his tears to work. Part of being a progressive politician is to be able to accomplish more than a random pop star can, on account of you have the reins of State in your hands. If Trudeau really thinks Downie was so great, he can honour him best by fulfilling his literal dying wish - that Canada turns around our relationship with it's indigenous people.

The internet tells me that the whole collaboration with The Pogues was Eamonn's idea (indeed, he's the producer on "Irish Rover" - and all Dubs material thereafter), and indeed it was only at/about that time he joined the band (although he'd worked with them and Ronnie previously). Not bad impact for a newcomer.

RIP Eamon Campbell. The first time i saw Eamonn perform was in November 1986, at the Theatre Fabrik Munich a double header featuring the Dubliners and The Pogues. What a night that was,not surprisingly the evening ended with both bands performing together, this could have been the first time that The Pogues and the Dub Liners{thank you Janice Long!]played together live.i I was there in Vienna in '85 when Spider jammed with 2 or was it 3? Dubliners in the restaurant at the Festival so that hardly counts.Getting back to Eamonn Campbell,he was a lovely bloke,i only met him a couple of times but like his fellow Dubliners he was funny, had to the odd story to tale and he was a very talented musician and producer. The Irish Rover need i say more?
