It's a really difficult thing to do, Eric. I mean it's hard enough having to make the decision yourself that it's the right thing to do, but explaining it to your kids makes it even harder. I've had to face it more than once with cats. It's always hard for kids to face that loss, but I guess it's an essential part of growing up.

Anyway, glad to hear you've got X home. Good luck to you all.

Update: X (lately known as pumpkin kitty) is now home. Still on lots of meds, though. I'll let you all know when he finally kicks. He's a big ginger tabby, everyone has always said he's a beautiful cat, which he is, but he's gonna die. Really bad heart. I figure if all goes well, he'll die in his sleep. And then we'll have a wake, online. He's 12 1/2.

12,5 normally is no age for a cat. Poor thing. Are there any chances that he might get well again?

No. Severe heart disease. We're just waiting for him to die, and want him to go at home.
What kind of fuckery is this?

Youtube RIP

Its new owner, Google, has confirmed that when it takes control of if early next year it will no longer tolerate any form of copy write violation. Eg any clips of music, film, TV etc etc on without permission will be deleted.

I should think that will wipe about 80% of it off.

It was good while it lasted!

How do The Pogues feel about their clips? I imagine lots of their stuff was put up without permission too, did that in any way hinder / help sales or show attendance?

Still thinking it through. If people really want to watch fuzzy clips recorded with a cellphone, it seems a bit churlish to prevent them and a bit mean to charge them royalties. But a professionally produced video has usually cost us or someone acting on our behalf a lot of money to make and should be subject to all the usual artist and composer dues. But already I see a massive grey area. If a band, say, makes their own "official" video taped with a cellphone for creative reasons, which category does that belong to? And are U2 more entitled to royalties than a garage band from Ballymun who've uploaded their friend's college film project?

Another argument frequently tossed around is that videos (three-five minutes) are "promotional material" intended to help boost album and show sales. By uploading them to various web sites many people feel they're helping to promote the bands they like.

Do you agree with that?

Just my two cents, but I think DZM is right, most of these clips promote
the band. I will admit to downloading songs off of Napster in their glory days- mostly live Pogues and rare stuff I couldn't find, but I still went and bought all the remasters (as imports  didn't know Rhino was going to release them) -my third purchase of each album, as I originally bought
them as cassettes and then CDs.

I would certainly have no problem with the Pogues banning clips from
the Town and Country concerts (which I believe is unable on DVD in the US)
as that was a commercial product you can buy. I don't see the harm on letting us watch old TV appearances or shaky concert films.

What if a band's "official" website had the capability of letting its members upload their own videos, fuzzy or otherwise, for the enjoyment of other members?

Assuming this were possible, and being done with the band's blessing, I would think it would be a big draw for the band, as well as the website.

Well, given the limited constituency, it's hard to find fault with that. Only trouble is, whats to prevent someone transferring THESE to YOuTube?

On the "promo" argument put forward by DZM I have mixed feelings. For many years our record company/ies argued that Promo Videos were a useful marketing tool, but there is scant evidence they were correct. They were almost invariably costly (to us), time consuming (and usually on our only day off in weeks) and, when finished we had to batttle with various censors about their content before they could be shown on TV (particularly in the case of "Pair Of Brown Eyes" and "Fiesta"). With the exception perhaps of "Fairytale Of New York", they were all a massive waste of time and money and energy, and perhaps I only say that because I managed to escape that particul shoot.

There's something to be said - maybe - for the Radiators from Space making avaiable a TV clip or so, as it took 3 minutes to film and as long, I suppose, to upload. But the Radiators from Space are one of the world's great Mysteries, a druidic entity known only by The Few.
