Yes, and our public broadcaster, CBC is giving us unhelpful nonstop nonstop blanket coverage of everything we don't know... Don't get me wrong, this is terrible, but it's like ebola terrible: unlikely to become the primary threat to most Canadian's lives, or indeed even most Canadian soldiers' lives. And i can only see our right-wing government running amuck with power after this.

Dead is 24 year old Nathan Cirillo, an army reservist from Hamilton who was serving today as an honour guard at the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier", a WWI memorial next to the federal parliment buildings. Also dead is the apparant shooter, 32 year old canadian born Michael Zehaf-Bibeau.

If media reports are accurate, it seems like he might have been shot by our (obstensibly symbolic) sergant at arms. Even an old anarchist like me thinks that's actualy pretty awesome, if only he'd used that big gold mace he carries into and out of parliment...

Sergeant at Arms Kevin Vickers, a former member of the RCMP & private security to dignitaries, is apparantly already being referred to as "Barrister Selmy" on social media.

Death comes in threes they say:

Viktor Tikhonov, 84 Famed coach of the Soviet Red Army Hockey Team

Fondly remembered here for pulling Tretiak and losing to the US in the 1980 Olympics Miracle on Ice!!

Pat Quinn, 71 NHL Player and coach-not fondly remembered for catching Bobby Orr with his head down.
The hit was so bad, that reputedly Orr's teammate Phil Esposito was approached after the game and was asked by a member of the Boston Mafia if they should put a hit on Pat Quinn!

and finally, former DC Mayor Marion Berry, whose legacy will always be him getting caught smoking crack!!

Jean Beliveau, 83

Classy NHL Hall of Famer for the Montreal Canadiens. Won the Stanley Cup 10 times! Along with Ken Dryden, almost destroyed my childhood when in 1971, his Habs beat my heavily favored Boston Bruins in the SC playoffs.

RIP Le Gros Bill

In a bad week for musicians, Ian McLagan, keyboard player with the Faces, the Small Faces, the Stones and others, has followed Bobby Keys (saxophonist with the Stones and others) to the great session in the sky. RIP.
