That's terrible, though from what i've gathered over the years, RTE are far from alone in this process. But to think that it wouldn't occur to somebody that a drama might deserve a re-broadcast at some date in the future...

Happened to Doctor Who at the BBC too. Legend has it that this was a protocol that was partially driven by the actor's union. The thought was that if there was a backlog of content then there would be no new work for actors, so the wiping of tapes was a way for the union to assure that there would be an ongoing demand for actors. Or something like that.

Soviet Hockey great Vlad Krutov, 52

Great member of the famed "Green Unit"/KLM line. Played a season in the NHL with Vancouver, but wasn't successful, some said because of his love of North American food, he was derisively nicknamed "Vlad the Inhaler".

Cute. Tho' he was part of at least two Russian teams that won Gold in the Olympics.

For great triumvirate, read great quartet - the series O'Dea's Yer Man was directed by Strumpet City author James Plunkett. He also co-wrote the series (not sure if he was credited for that though) as it turned out Flann O'Brien was not much kop at writing proper dialogue (source: Anthony Cronin No Laughing Matter: The Life and Times of Flann O'Brien, although Cronin writes as if Strumpet City had already been written by 1963 when O'Dea's Yer Man was made, when in fact it wasn't published until 1969).

Teófilo Stevenson 60

Cuban boxer, Three time Olympic Gold Medalist 1972-1976-1980

A shame though, imo, that he was never matched up against the great US fighters of the era-Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes. In 1976, the Spinks boys, Leon and Michael were in the Lt. Heavyweight and Middleweight class, as John Tate was the heavyweight.

Rodney King

"Police in Rialto, California, received a 911 call from King's fiancee, Cynthia Kelly, about 5:25 a.m., said Capt. Randy DeAnda. Responding officers found King at the bottom of the pool, removed him and attempted to revive him. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital, DeAnda said."

RIP
