How utterly miserable. To kill your own children... nobody can understand what might make you do this. So sad, for everyone. And yes, hope the surviving children get all the support they will need for years to come.

RIP Lawrence Darrow Brown aka Dobie Gray

Died this week aged 71. I've had lots of happy times on the dancefloor thanks to Mr Gray. See You at the Go-Go, Out on the Floor, What a Way to Go, The In Crowd, Drift Away.

I think his tunes will get a few spins in the clubs in the North West tonight. RIP.

George Galloway quite rightly called him a "popinjay" and Hitch was unrepentant on his stance favouring the Iraq War (he was more of a Blair liberal interventionist than a Niall Ferguson style neo-imperialist, though the net result was the same) and if by your friends you be judged, his schoolboy crush on the ever-ludicrous Martin Amis was a tad unwise. All the same, his dismissal of the irrational and the superstitious admirably did not waiver a beat in the prolonged expectation of his own death and the world can ill afford to have an underpowered Public Intellectual sector at the moment. Rest in peace, Hitch.

Well summarized!

Dave Zirin
On Being Spit Upon—Literally—by Christopher Hitchens
It was quite a journey for Hitchens, who went from fierce polemicist against imperial war to being equally fierce in favor of it, a process anti-war British MP George Galloway described as “evolution in reverse, from butterfly to slug.”

Kim Jong Il

Fuck him, glad he's gone. I do hope the next guy isn't worse-the Korean people have seen enough pain.

In a week that's seen the loss of Hitch and Havel, this seems fair play at the minimum.

Okay, but is it a bit weird that Vaclev Havel & Kim Jon Il died on the same day - a leader from the revolution that started the fall of the Soviet dominoes, and the leader of one of the stand-alone, last of the "communist" states? (Not, obviously, that any of the soviet or other alleged "communist" states have ever shown us actual socialism, but you all know what i mean).

Warren Hellman, financier and philanthropist, dies at 77

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/12/18/MNPR1M9LUD.DTL#ixzz1h0n2XlwU

In 2001, Mr. Hellman sponsored a free, outdoor concert devoted to bluegrass music, a love he had nurtured for years.

Since then, the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival has grown into an annual three-day event drawing more than 300,000 people to Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA USA. It is still free, with costs covered by an endowment that Hellman - an amateur banjo player - created to ensure that the festival would continue "after I croak," he said.

In addition, he bankrolled San Francisco ballot measures that reformed the city's pension system and created an underground parking garage beneath Golden Gate Park. He funded the San Francisco Free Clinic and helped set up an endowment to support aquatic sports at UC Berkeley.

Etc., etc., etc....
