Pretty much the entirety of the Russian ice hockey side, Lokomotiv -- including former NHL players Pavel Demitra, Ruslan Salei, Josef Vasicek, Brad McCrimmon, and Detroit goalie prospect Stefan Liv -- died today in a plane crash.

What an awful summer for ice hockey.
I like this bad set and I like getting drunk at luncheon.

Very sad indeed. Around 1980, I met Brad McCrimmon at a health club. He was watching my then 12 year old sister play tennis and commented how hard she hit for a little bit of a girl. We started talking and I, being a hockey nut, let on I knew he was a Bruin. I then inserted my then-teenage foot in my mouth when I told him I read in the Hockey News he was about to be traded to Philadelphia. I will always remember how gracious he acted "Just part of the game". Rest in Peace Beast :(

9/11

Post Mon Sep 12, 2011 2:44 am

Remembering all who perished today with special memory of my friend's Dad Richard Morgan a NY Con Ed who responded to the WTC.
Special thoughts about Hockey players "Ace" Bailey (Bruins) and Mark Bavis (BU) who I had the pleasure of watching play over the years.

Stopped at the memorial for Pilot John Ogonowski before I came home tonight.

My wife and I also thought about a former student she knew. He was a newlywed who had a ticket for United 175 but was unable to get Frequent Flyer seat for his wife, so they had to get a later flight.
He showed my wife the ticket and commented how not only would he have been dead but sure he would have been targeted since he was Jewish. A few years ago we ran into the couple and happily there are now two young boys who may never have been born...

Peace to all the brave men and women who still deal with the memories and loss.

Cliff Robertson

The man who played JFK, Hugh Hefner and Spiderman's Uncle Ben and won an Academy Award for Charly passed away at 88 on Saturday.

He also was airborne on 9/11 near the WTC. Story here:

I heard on NPR this morning that Wade Mainer, who
started his career playing banjo with J.E. Mainer's
Mountaineers in 1934, died on Sept 12 at age 104!
He played gigs locally in his adopted hometown of
Detroit well past his 100th birthday. What more could
any musician ask for?

9/11 Update

The family of Mark Bavis, the LA King hockey scout who was killed aboard United Flight 175 that crashed into the twin towers, settled their lawsuit against United Airlines and the security firms. They had been the only family that hadn't settled.

I was just watching Clinton's press conference from back in the day:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFYwgEJbJqk&feature=related

Total waffle from his campaign and I remember being pissed, having voted for him.

It's interesting that he mentions military justice. I recall a recent case where a gay sailor was murdered and burned in a base shed. The killer was not accused of a hate crime, just murder. We were meant to believe that it was a coincidence? That is military justice in action.

The victim was August Provost, based at Camp Pendleton: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/23/august-provost-gay-sailor_n_244063.html
