It's hard to remember which way to look. I've nearly been killed several times in Australia while trying to cross the road ... "Yep - Looks all clear." :(

Is it because they drive on the right/wrong side of the road?

Or is it the 4 horsemen "getting their man?". Let me see.......Fintan, Eric, Walshy and Soulfinger?

Now, which one is pestilence?

RIP a work friend.

We just found out she committed suicide on Friday. She leaves behind a family and lots of friends.

This one really does not make sense.

I have so far lost four friends to suicide over the years. It never makes sense, and the grief lessens very slowly. You have my deepest condolences Beisty. :(

Some of you may have been on the old FOS mailing list and not yet heard the very sad news about our good mate Roger. This is from Paddy Rolling Stone:

We are very sad to have to announce that our old friend Roger Spratt died early August.

Roger ran the FOS mailing list for many years, known as Boat Train, "our man in Boston" (later Florida), as we are sure some of you older FoSsers will remember. He was a huge Shane fan and used to fly to London regularly for the December shows. He made friends, in part very close ones too, among the list regulars and also got to know Shane fairly well, which meant a huge amount to him. We raise our glasses to Roger's memory. May he be happy wherever he is now.

The suck.

It's been many years since I've read the FOS list, but I remember Boat Train fondly. Good luck to you guy.

VALE Roger Spratt - a sad loss to all who knew him. I never did, but it sounds like I'd have liked to. I'll toast him today when the sun's over The Medusa's yard-arm.

Shit.

We met a couple of times at Shane's concerts. A really nice bloke. We drank the night away after a gig in Amsterdam in 1998 iirc. As far as I remember he suffered from a broken foot or something after being injured at a concert in England - but made the trip to Holland nonetheless.

Does anybody know the reason for his way too early end? Was it an accident or something?

VALE Don Chipp

Post Mon Aug 28, 2006 10:33 pm

Donald Leslie Chipp
(21 August 1925 - 28 August 2006)
Australian politician and author.

He was educated at Northcote High School and Melbourne University. After playing for Heidelberg in the VFA, he played briefly in the VFL in 1947 with the Fitzroy Football Club (playing 3 games for 1 goal).

After serving in the Royal Australian Air Force in World War II, Chipp entered federal politics in 1960 as the Liberal member for Higinbotham before a redistribution in 1968 moved Chipp to the Division of Hotham.

Initially appointed Minister for the Navy and Minister in charge of Tourist Activities by Harold Holt in 1967, Chipp was given the portfolio of Customs and Excise following the 1969 elections, where he gained national attention by reducing the number of publications banned from entering Australia, including Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer. These actions made him popular with much of Australian society but placed him at odds with many of his fellow party members, who considered his actions too radical. Following the Liberal Party's defeat at the 1972 federal election, Chipp served as Shadow Minister for Social Security but was not returned to the ministry after the Liberal Party under Malcolm Fraser swept back into power in 1975.

Citing the need for a new moderate political party, Chipp resigned from the Liberal Party in 1977 to help found the Australian Democrats. Having also resigned from parliament, Chipp stood for, and was elected to, the Australian Senate later the same year. As Democrats leader, Chipp was involved in various high profile environmental and social justice causes, including playing an important role in stopping the Franklin Dam Project.

Chipp retired as the leader of the Democrats in 1986, to be succeeded by Janine Haines. He ran unsuccessfully for election as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne in 2001.

In his later years, he suffered from Parkinsons Disease, although he still made a number of public appearances, most notably on the ABC chat show Enough Rope with Andrew Denton. He also gave an opening address to the Democrats national conference in Melbourne in May 2006.

He died in Melbourne on Monday 28 August 2006 at Epworth Hospital in Richmond.

KEEP THE BASTARDS IN HEAVEN HONEST DON.
