Best known for his role on "Happy Days".

But better remembered as Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia in the Pulitzer prize-winning musical Fiorello! :)

Jerry Bock (81) American composer

He wrote the music for Fiddler On The Roof, though She Loves Me was perhaps the better show. Last week, he was predeceased by Joe Stein, who wrote, among other things, the Book of Fiddler.

Sparky was born in South Dakota. We are always proud of the few celebrities we have from the state as our entire population is only 800,000

Pat Burns age 58, NHL Head Coach

Former police officer of Gatineau, Que., Burns coached 14 seasons in the NHL from 1988-2004 and compiled a 501-350-161-14 record in 1,019 games with the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and the Devils. He missed the playoffs only once, in 1999-2000 with the Bruins. He became just the 11th individual in NHL history to reach the 1,000 games-coached mark on Feb. 27, 2004, and the ninth to reach the 500-win plateau on March 30, 2004. Burns won the Stanley Cup in 2003 with the Devils.

29 miners in New Zealand, it appears, have joined untold thousands in that great, not-a-mine in the sky.

All the more poignant because of the success of the Chilean operation. Hard to believe that in the 21st century, workers' safety should still be an issue.

We have remote control fucking warplanes, why not robot miners? Why? 'Cause life is fucking cheap. Cheaper than fucking coal, apparently.

When I was a kid in Nova Scotia, we learned the lyrics to Peggy Seeger's "Springhill Mine Disaster"

'....When the earth is restless, miners die
Bone and blood is the price of coal....'

My ancestors are coal miners from Durham, UK, and there are several memorials up there with their names engraved on them...
...ain't it funny how you used to know everybody in these parts...
