Jay Reatard found dead at 29. Saw him open for the Pixies in November. He put a heck of a show on. A very talented garage rocker from Memphis.. this bummed me out. Too sad.

Bobby Charles, dead at 71.

Famous for lots of songs, but famous to me for Down South In New Orleans on "The Last Waltz", and Silver & Gold as recorded by Joe Strummer.

Such a pity. His "Tennessee Blues" and "Small Town Talk" were exceptional tracks.

Small Town Talk, i forgot about that one! My teenage crush, Rick Danko, did a great cover of that.

RIP Bobby (& Rick too).

Wow, Teddy Pendergrass? I hadn't heard. I once witnessed a crime and when asked by the police to describe the "perp" I said "He looked just like Teddy Pendergrass". Stupid cops, not knowing who Teddy was, looked at me like I was out of my mind. This was before the days of Google and I was at work so I couldn't show them an album cover... sheesh, stupid cops.

But I digress... R.I.P Teddy :(

Actaully, turns out that was a Danko/Charles co-write. No wonder it seemed written for Rick's idosynchratic phrasing.

Kate McGarrigle, Canadian folk musician, and mother of Rufus and Martha Wainwright, died 18th January, aged just 63. RIP.

What a tragic loss. I loved her retelling of how toddler Rufus, unimpressed by her folk stylings on banjo as she practised at home, suddenly came to life when she sat at the piano and played a Gershwin or a Cole Porter standard. "Teach me that one, Mommy"

RIP Kate. Very sad to have just heard this on the radio myself. Those of us who grew up without cable TV in Canada in the 1970s all watched the same filler programming between kids shows again & again every week. And we were introduced to the McGarrigle sisters via this National Film Board short:

Got great working-class consciousness in it.

Rufus interviewed last night for radio retailed how Kate was surrounded by her family in her final hours before she slipped away. Everyone took turns to play and/or sing and Kate had lost none of her critical faculties, evaluating and commenting on each performance in turn!

That's good to know. Last time I saw Kate was at a Martha Wainwright gig sometime in the last year, when she came onstage to accompany her daughter for some of the concert. It wasn't the easiest of evenings -- Martha for some reason appeared to be, to put it mildly, not in the best of moods -- but the sparks between the two of them livened things up considerably. It is good to know that they were together at the end, and that Kate appreciated it. She will be sadly missed.
