Very sad. Very weird for me. I stayed over my mother's house on Tuesday night in order to attend an early meeting at work. While there, I leafed through a photo album from sometime in the late 80s/early 90s. Inside were pics of an "Irish" Carribean (sp?) Cruise that my parents had gone on. Some great pictures of my parents with Liam and Tommy Makem who were the entertainers on the cruise.

So glad Liam recorded Broad Majestic Shannon before he left. I will always have some fond memories of "working" at a Makem and Clancy concert
that my late uncle's radio show sponsored.

We dedicated Broad Majestic to him tonight at the Olympia. Rest in peace.

I feel like my grandfather just died - again. My first folk music (other than maybe Peter, Paul & Mary) came to me from my grandfather. When staying with my grandparents, I'd listen to his old records in the basement; my favourites were The Clancy Brothers ones (ok, also the Bill Cosby ones). He passed away when i was 15, and his Clancy Brothers records now live in my collection.

I thought their performance of When the Ship Comes In was a highlight of the Bob Dylan 30th anniversary show back in 1993 (sorry Pogues, yours is great but that one stands as the definitive version in my mind).

RIP Liam.

Those of you outside the Midwest may have never heard of this guy, but those of us who participated in the Minneapolis music scene in the 80's will never forget...

Kiki, France's favourite tortoise, aged 146.

His distinctive personality and "demonstrative lovemaking" had made him a favourite with the French public.

According to Marie-Claude Bomsel, a vet at the zoo, he was so vigorous in his pursuit of female tortoises that his grunts could be heard from the other end of the zoo and the Jardin des Plantes.

"To be honest, from time to time I even saw him go after a wheelbarrow. You see what we were dealing with," Bomsel told French radio. "That was one of his characteristics. We all loved him."

[Sorry for lowering the tone of this thread. But you don't often get to mark the passing of a 146-year-old. And do other countries have a favourite tortoise? Is this something every nation should have?]

Not a good week for the young, rich and troubled. Cincinnati Bengal WR Chris Henry, 26 also died this week from injuries sustained in a domestic violence situation, fell off his girlfriend's pickup.

Al died about ten minutes ago, at around 23:15 on Dec 31, 2008 (also, coincidentally, his 48th anniversary with Carol).

Goodbye Poppy. I'll always be grateful to you and Carol for the acceptance and friendship you've given me over the last 18 years. Thank you for everything.

Al died just slightly shy (11 hours shy at this writing) of one year ago. The whole family is still trying to come to grips with Al and Carol both being gone. Thanksgiving was an impromptu affair at Chez DzM, Christmas was ... well ... done two days before Christmas at an Italian restaurant. The Lovely Mrs. DzM and her siblings are still trying to figure out what the traditional family holidays mean when the central part of their family is now gone.

We miss you Al. 2009 didn't stand much of a chance of not sucking since it began, literally, with your death. Let's hope 2010 gets off to a happier start.

Best wishes to you and Carol on your 49th anniversary.
