Apparently Robert Enke first went to see a therapist in 2003 because of depression, and continued to see him daily for a couple of months. Things seemed to get better for a while, even before he made his comeback at our local team, Hannover 96, and still a huge thanks from us all to former coach Ewald Lienen for bringing this amazing human being and fantastic goalkeeper here.
In 2006 Robert and Teresa Enke had to deal with the loss of their 2 year old daughter, who was born with some kind of heart damage and died after yet another operation she had to undergo.
In May 2009 they then adopted a 3 month old baby daughter, so things seemed to look a lot better.
It is said that Robert Enke started seeing his therapist again about six weeks ago, when he seemed to suffer from a mysterious virus disease which was yet another setback on his way to national goalkeeper No. 1. He had obviously decided to keep this away from public, as it is said mainly because of fear his adopted daughter could be taken away from again because he suffered from depression.
His widow held a press conference today, telling the public about Robert Enkes disease and how difficult it was to live with it, an amazing woman.
A lot of people in Germany, and especially here in Hannover, are still in shock. A public divine service just ended, watched it on TV, and now fans and mourners will retreat to the AWD Arena to celebrate him and sign condolence books.
Rest in peace, Robert Enke. You were the best.
