Nobel Prize winner Norman Borlaug dies at 95
Called father of ‘green revolution,’ he’s credited with saving millions of lives
And I don't want no grave
Just throw my ashes in the field
And hope there's some soul left to save

I was fortunate enough to see Jim perform spoken word and a few songs one night in Longbeach, CA. His support act was Michael McClure reading poetry while Ray Manzarek played accompanying music.

I'll second that. I've been a cat person all my life. The bond one shares with a cat is unlike any other. My sincere condolences.

My Uncle Bernie McCarthy

He was born in Ballaghaderreen, Roscommon, spent his childhood years there, before he moved to Birmingham, England for school. After school,
he came to the States and joined the USAF. He settled in the Boston area after that.

Bernie was a leader in keeping all aspects of Irish culture alive in Boston. He was a member of an Irish band "The Fenian Folk" playing flute/tin whistle who were the house band at the old Village Coach House in Brookline back in the 1970s, long before Irish Pubs were on every street corner. They covered "Dirty Old Town" before the Pogues made it fashionable! He was the co-host of the "Sound of Erin" Radio program for nearly three decades. Their impact on the Boston Irish scene was written about here:

http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles ... ish_music/
"McCarthy said. ''The main reason for starting the show was to broadcast the Wolfe Tones, the Dubliners, the Chieftains, and the music that was really happening in Ireland at that time," McCarthy said. ''It wasn't being heard here, really."

He was a past President of the Eire Society and was involved with the Boston Irish Theater Group-suprising his nephew at how well he could act.

His favorite Pogues song was "Bottle of Smoke".

I was always so proud of him and I am going to miss him terribly.

http://www.thefrisky.com/tag/gertrude+baines/

The world’s oldest person, 115-year-old Gertrude Baines, died peacefully in her sleep Friday morning. The saucy senior citizen was born in 1894 and grew up in Georgia. Her father was a slave and she lived through the height of segregation. She was married and divorced once, and had a daughter in 1909 who died of typhoid when she was 18 years old. Despite her difficult path, Gertrude wasn’t a curmudgeon. In fact, the caretakers at her nursing home describe her as sweet and sassy. Gertrude made the news last year when she voted for Barack Obama, and on her 115th birthday, she said she’d like to live another four years just to “vote for Barack again.” Before the last election, Gertrude had only voted once before, for John F. Kennedy. She told the LA Times that she supported Obama “because he’s for the coloured” and that she kept a signed picture of the prez on her wall. [Reuters]

I just found out in reading about his death that he lived in my neighborhood for much of his teen years and even went to the same grammar school as me for a year or so; although many years earlier. Apparently, much of Basketball Diaries took place in that neighborhood. There is even reference to the street interescection of Cumming and Seaman about 250 ft. from my childhood apartment building: http://www.cassiecarter.com/New_design/Flash/JCsNYC.php
