Jim Green, former Vancouver city councilor and twice-failed mayoral candidate, and mover-and-shaker in local housing struggles, has died this morning. Also known for presenting free opera in the downtown eastside's Blood Alley.

Jim was from that generation of draft-dodgers who were forced to flee their homeland and bring all their passion, intelligence, and future to us. Thanks, American war hawks! Those guys have done a lot for the province of British Columbia, and Jim was one of the big ones. Tho i never understood why he wore both a belt AND suspenders. Along with his pork pie hat and scarfs, it made him one of the coolest-looking councilors this city has ever seen.

Wow. That shocks me.

Although he died in Florida (of a heart attack), Davy lived very near me, in Beaver Springs PA.

And with him dies a little bit of my childhood. I LOVED that show when i was wee. Great to hear that some of his last recorded work was a song for a Sandra Boynton board book (author of "Not the Hippopotamus" and other toddler favourites).

Patti LuPone's Rabbit Tango from Boynton's Blue Moo is quite catchy.

I am a little sad that my kids will not grow up seeing shows like the Brady bunch and gilligan's island over and over again like I did. They were not the pinnacle of entertainment but bonded us together in a way because everyone saw them.

Sad news. The Monkees was required TV viewing in every primary schoolkid's house in - when would it have been? - around '67 or '68, I guess. Most of my female classmates swooned at the very thought of little Davy. It all seemed so fresh and new and fun back then. RIP.
