REM great band,saw them way back in the early 80's,in a venue that was usually a strip club,except the night REM were in town,the next time was at Birmingham University a much better venue,happy days!I loved their earlier stuff,all their IRS and early Warners albums on glorious vinyl and cassette.Expect the first reunion tour has already been scheduled.

I really think he might well be known as the last capitalist that actually thought his company would be better by just providing a better product rather than providing a better advertising campaign, or a more efficient customer service... etc, etc.

Actually, Steve Jobs had a very close working relationship with Steve Hayden, the guy behind most of Apple's advertising. One of the big power couple of modern advertising. In fact, Hayden left Apple when Jobs was forced out, and returned with him when he came back. I think it's fair to say that apples ad campaigns have been a significant part of their global domination.

No, I get that, and undoubtedly Apple wouldn't have happened without their ads and the way all of their products always looked new and sleek and just so much like they needed to be possessed. But my point was more to do with after so many years of me purchasing crappy printers, pcs, mp3s, and pretty much anything that runs on ones and zeros, apple seemed to be the only one that made products that actually did what they said they would do. For me (and hopefully for my subconscious self that is probably creepily affected by adverts) the actual product does matter.

I would tend to agree with you, except i'd mention that Apple is as guilty as anyone else with the planned obsolescence (having just had to buy a new wireless router for no good reason, i'm bitter). And every generation of laptop needs a new video out cable... and now there's no firewire?
