I was a huge Letterman fan back in the 80's. Bud was quite the character.
Here is a funny clip of him at the Staten Island Ferry handing out
warm towels.

Thanks for the clip! Alas, I cannot view it, as we live in the near wilderness w/a slow dial up connection, so no partaking of the youtube for me. I do, however, recall that particular bit. Larry "Bud" Melman made me laugh, no matter what.

Hear, hear!

Jay Leno is the scum of the earth, in my opinion, hiding in closets, etc.Not to mention his totally stealing bits from The Late Show. You can't fake (or steal) cool and Dave's got it.

Well, Frances, while I can't so far as to call Mr. Leno the scum of the earth, I surely cannot tolerate either him or his show. I have come to the conclusion that one can categorize people by those who like David Letterman and those who like Jay Leno, and never the twain shall meet.

I've read Bill Carters book,The Late Shift, on the whole...taking the reigns of The Tonight Show...fiasco and after reading about Leno proudly admitting he hid in a closet to spy on NBC execs....I decided I was right all along about that freak.

I also find him to be a bit of a Carnegie type....he pulls all this crap to get what he wanted, even throwing out his long time manager when his hand was forced/crushed....yet tries to excuse it all....by stating that he puts all his Tonight Show earnings away.He doesn't ever spend it.Guilty conscience I'd say.I'd love for him to spend it on a new life in Dubai...today!

The truth is NBC realized their mistake and were eager to ditch Leno, offering The Tonight Show to Mr. Letterman...who turned it down.Class move! The thing that saved Leno was Hugh Grant. When they announced Conan was taking over as Tonight Show host I wanted it to be immediate.6 years,or something like that, to go...Jesus!

I have a friend / former co-worker who's son is a lead singer. When his band appeared on Letterman I was jealous!I would have loved to have gone. When she skipped work, got picked up by a limo and attended his Tonight Show taping...it made me sick!

It sounds like your family may soon present you with this dilemma as well.Such fun!

Darryl Stingley, American footballer - former Purdue Boilermaker and New England Patriot, aged 55.

Paralyzed from the neck down in 1978 after getting hit in a game by the master of the cheap shot, Jack Tatum.

I read his memior of his life and injury when I was a kid - seemed like a very nice man.

Well, that would be something! However, my nephew is so darned humble, I usually have to get my news about his career from elsewhere and then ask him about it. If he were on late night TV, I probably wouldn't know about it until I heard the announcer say his name!

Yes, he was.

"Here we are, trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why."

I'm having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that my buddy Brownie got Slaughterhouse Five yesterday from Netflicks, and we watched it last night.

I wonder what time he died. I wonder if I was watching the movie at the time.

"I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all the kinds of things you can't see from the center."

God Bless You Mr. Vonnegut

My favorite Vonnegut moment was his "Back To School" appearance...genius.

I'm ashamed to say I thought Kitty Carlisle was already in the Hereafter...a few years ago when the Simpsons showed a glimpse of the future, and Bart was on "Match Game 2112" or whatever year it was...along with "the ever-vivacious head of Kitty Carlisle", I thought it was in ghastly taste. Funny, but ghastly. But heck, I guess Kitty was in on the joke.

RIP Kitty...I mainly knew her as a game-show panelist when I was a kid, but she was really a link to a bygone, golden era.
