I am heading to South Carolina Tuesday for business and as luck would have it James McMurtry and the Heartless Bastards are playing nearby (200 miles down the road) so I have just purchased tickets for the following shows:

Tue May 8 '07
10:00PM
Charlotte, NC
Visulite Theater

Wed May 9 '07
8:30PM
Greenville, SC
The Handlebar

Thu May 10 '07
8:30PM
Athens, GA
Melting Point

3 states in 3 nights so I guess I will have to bring along the Ron Kavana Irish Ways boxset I just acquired to pass the time.

Any other Medusans planning to attend any of these shows?

Tonights McMurtry show in Greenville, SC was awesome...

Out here in the middle
Where the center's on the right
And the ghost of William Jennings Bryan preaches every night
To save the lonely souls
in the dashboard lights
Wish you were here my love
Wish you were here my love

Thin Lizzy

Just seen that Thin Lizzy are coming on tour in this direction later in the year. Has anyone seen them lately? How are they these days? It's hard to imagine the band without Mr Lynott.

We had a most wonderful evening Friday at a local blues festival! It is the 4th year of its existence, and the first year with good weather. The festival was held at the rodeo grounds on the outskirts of town, the main stage under a roof. The temperature was in the 70s, with a lovely breeze. 600 or so people sat at picnic tables or in camp chairs, eating barbecue and sipping locally brewed beer. I nearly missed going, as I was exhausted from my work week and the near 90 degree daytime temperature, but I was so happy to have gone!

First was David "Honeyboy" Edwards, a Delta bluesman in his 90s, who was a cohort of Robert Johnson, and recorded by Alan Lomax. Just the night before he was named Acoustic Artist of the Year at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis (formerly the W.C. Handy Awards.) He was amazing. I especially enjoyed Sweet Home Chicago.

Following Honeyboy was Otis Taylor, w/his bassist daughter and drummer, playing what was described by the drummer as "trance blues." Truly fun.

Closing out the night was Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and his band w/Hubert Sumlin. Willie was named Instrumentalist: Drummer at the Music Awards, although this night he played a mean harmonica. Sumlin was given the award for Instrumentalist: Guitarist by the Blues Foundation. They both were incredible, as was bassist Bob Stroger, and the rest of the band: cool blues guys who have been around awhile and love to play. How great it was to stand just a few feet before them and experience the deep emotion in their performances. I am now rejuvenated and ready to face Monday!

Wow! Sounds fantastic!

I've seen Otis Taylor, and Hubert a couple of times. You gotta cherish those guys while they're still kickin'!

I'm totally jealous that you saw Honeyboy...a first hand connection to Robert Johnson. And as far as I know, the ONLY one still playing gigs.

I did not know that Willie "Big Eyes" played harp!

I took my mom to see Fred Eaglesmith yesterday at Eddie's Attic in Decatur as a combination Mither's Day (hers) and birthday (mine) trip. Great show, with a great band. I've never seen any other singer/songwriter who combines the songwriting skills of a Hank Williams with the comedic skills of a Steven Wright, but he manages it. And in the minute or so that I got to talk with him afterwards, he seems like a really nice, down-to-earth guy who's very gracious toward his fans.

It is very hard to imagine, but maybe there is someone in Finland who could fill us in. Thin Lizzy are opening a couple of shows for a nearly-original Deep Purple in about ten days.
I only know this because DP will be here in July, and I'm considering buying tickets. They rocked my teen years. Edgar Winter Band opening.
Damn, I'm getting old.
