We had a most wonderful evening Friday at a local blues festival! It is the 4th year of its existence, and the first year with good weather. The festival was held at the rodeo grounds on the outskirts of town, the main stage under a roof. The temperature was in the 70s, with a lovely breeze. 600 or so people sat at picnic tables or in camp chairs, eating barbecue and sipping locally brewed beer. I nearly missed going, as I was exhausted from my work week and the near 90 degree daytime temperature, but I was so happy to have gone!
First was David "Honeyboy" Edwards, a Delta bluesman in his 90s, who was a cohort of Robert Johnson, and recorded by Alan Lomax. Just the night before he was named Acoustic Artist of the Year at the Blues Music Awards in Memphis (formerly the W.C. Handy Awards.) He was amazing. I especially enjoyed Sweet Home Chicago.
Following Honeyboy was Otis Taylor, w/his bassist daughter and drummer, playing what was described by the drummer as "trance blues." Truly fun.
Closing out the night was Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and his band w/Hubert Sumlin. Willie was named Instrumentalist: Drummer at the Music Awards, although this night he played a mean harmonica. Sumlin was given the award for Instrumentalist: Guitarist by the Blues Foundation. They both were incredible, as was bassist Bob Stroger, and the rest of the band: cool blues guys who have been around awhile and love to play. How great it was to stand just a few feet before them and experience the deep emotion in their performances. I am now rejuvenated and ready to face Monday!
Songs are really just very interesting things to be doing with the air. - Tom Waits
