I went to see the Oysterband löast night but I must say I was a bit disappointed. The difference to a band like The Pogues (or, in the nineties, The Whisky Priests) was obvious - they just don´t have the same power. And their choice of songs was a bit dubious to me, too - no "Hal-an-tow", no "Oxford girl", no "Granite years" and so on. At least they played my Oysterband favourite - "Blood wedding" - but that didn´t save the evening, really.
I noticed that the Oyterband are maybe the only band I´ve seen so far which I like better on CD than in a live show. Never thought this would happen, especially not in this kind of music.

Plus, they only played about 90 minutes I think. This, too, is a bit weak.

That's a short gig by Oysterband standards! Often they play for two hours or more!

Thing with the Oysterband is that they have a pretty big back catalogue, and only ever seem to have about one older song in the live set -- and of course they're touring a new album at the moment, so presumably there was lots off that played at the gig?

I prefer the older stuff as well like Oxford Girl, Hal-an-Tow, Lost and Found and Granite Years.

Give them another chance if they do play in your area again, as they are usually an outstanding live band!

Sorry it wasn't a good night, Duke. Like Shaz says, that's a short gig by Oysterband standards. And yes, they are touring a new album, so I suppose they were pushing that...

I last saw them in December, and it was a cracking gig, with most of the old favourites. No "Hal-an-tow" that night, as I remember, but almost all of the other essentials. Small-ish crowd, but they really got them going.
Likes the warm feeling but is tired of all the dehydration.

Yeah, I guess they played a lot of songs from their new album. But none of those songs really attracted me.

But I think I will give them a second chance when they come around again.

Just read that The Real McKenzies will be playing Hannover on April 23rd. I suppose I´ll be there.

Ooooh! I'll have to check n' see if they're touring here.I really enjoyed the one concert ,of theirs, I attended. Brilliant.

I watched the R&R Hall of Fame inductions while trapped on a plane. It was slow...slow...boring...and then Stipe showed his personality and rocked the fuck OUT! Though Eddie OhMyGodHe'sSoBoring Vedder's R.E.M. speech was the most retarded thing I've heard since Courtney Love's last verbal assault.

Enjoy!

If the Decemberists ever show up around your neck of the woods, definitely check them out, folks. They put on a very fun show, complete with audience participation, a pirouetting drummer and a giant whale. They're very talented artists, but talented artists who are actually having fun on stage are worth the price of admission every time.

Yeah, I just missed them recently at a college nearby. I heard afterwards that it was great, and that the above-mentioned Price of Admission was only $15.

Speaking of shows I missed: my buddy Marc (Sir Poguesalot) saw the Stooges at the 9:30 in DC on Thursday - and was onstage with them during "No Fun" !

He'll NEVER let me forget that, I feel certain.

Which is as it should be.
