In the last couple of weeks I have been to see Grace Petrie and Kris Drever. Both of whom were excellent, in different ways (and styles).

BABYMETAL are playing the Forum, but... I don’t miss that place at all.

Wanted to see Princess until I watched a live video.
The blonde one. Umm.

The video of Maya Rudolph singing Prince in front of Image at the SNL party was amazing, though.

Going to Boston Gliderdrome to see T Rexstasy tonight..tribute band but a very good one and it's the same venue where, back in July 1971, aged just 15, i attended my very first gig..which was T Rex..so sort of going full circle..and it's the first time out this year for me!

He was very good indeed. I went, primarily, to see him do my old favourites, Sunday Papers, Look Sharp, Is She Really, Different for Girls, I'm the Man. He did them so very well! The Stepping Out era stuff was excellent too. The stuff from his new album was terrific. A great way to spend Easter Sunday. Cheers John

Well I'll have to keep an eye out for him then. Cheers!

The Specials last night at the Commodore here in Vancouver were every bit as good as I hoped they'd be. Lynval and Horace are superstars, I hope I'm as limber as Lynval when I'm his age! Saffiyah Kahn and the wall of dub on "10 Commandments" were an amazing addition.

The new stuff went over well overall, and it was nice to get something other than a greatest hits package (although there were plenty of those).

Was fun to pogo with all the old Trad-Skins dressed to the nines in all their 2Tone finery (formal attire?) Where did they all come from? Where are all these guys the rest of the year?!

Lucinda Williams last night at the Commodore here in Vancouver, doing a "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" show.

Amazing, of course. If i have half the passion - and half the hair - this woman has when I'M 66 years old, i'll consider life a success. Her voice has aged, and she struggled on the odd line, but i more noticed that her phrasing is quite different now from 20 years ago, which is not at all a bad thing but definitely changed some of the songs. Her band - "Buick 6" - are amazing, three guys who sound like 6. Yet strangely, the whole ensemble pulled out possibly the worst cover I've ever heard of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" at the end of the night. Otherwise a great show.

At the Vancovuer Folk Fest this past weekend, I saw Dwayne Dopsie & The Zydeco Hellraisers share a stage with the Montreal klezmer band Oktopus.

Image

Once the Hellraisers started they spread out and dominated the stage, squishing the klezmer octet into a corner (just like what has always happened to the Jews*, i though sadly). He started calling them out to solo on his songs, and (at first) only the fiddle player rose to the challenge (and did she ever) - the others seemed caught off guard, intimidated even. By the end, though, like James Brown reborn as The Undisputed King of Zydeco Accordion, Dwayne had them coming over to solo in front of him, and he'd turned the whole lot of 'em into HIS band. Those klezmer folks are incredibly talented, don't get me wrong, but i bet they've never played as well or as hard as they did for that hour.

Also, the Hellraisers' guitarist can play a mean freilach. I suspect he could also sub into Pantera without missing a beat, he was amazing.

*Except for the Golan Heights...

Yay! It's firehazard! I wonder if Mr. Cave will personally greet you again.

Also - I can't help but notice that Mr. Cave's Red Right Hand no longer graces the opening credits of Peaky Blinders.

Thanks DzM... I'm still alive, I think, but have had major tech issues recently. As it were.

Red Right Hand is still there, at least some of the time, if not every episode... sometimes in a Hey, That's Not Mr Cave version. :)

Are you certain? In the most recent series (with the fascist) I'd swear it's missing from the opening sequence. I recall in the second series each episode had a cover version, and the series before this one reverted back to Mr. Cave. It struck me and the Lovely Mrs. DzM both noted its absence this year.

We saw Stone Foundation in Manchester on Friday. They were so jolly splendid this time that when I got home, I immediately bought tickets to see them in Leeds next Thursday. I wouldn't normally venture into Yorkshire unless The Pogues were on there. I've seen SF about a dozen times since discovering them supporting The Specials a while back and they get better each time.

I would be hard pressed to pick a current live favourite from them. Skinny Lister and Smoove & Turrell...
