Scored 2 more seats for the sold out show at Royal Albert Hall so we decided to bring the girls to London with us since they are now also friends with Dan Reed and will enjoy seeing the reunion show of his original band Dan Reed Network. However the highlight of this trip will be the opportunity to visit my dear friend Doc Harry's sisters over in Ireland for a few days between the shows. Personally I have never been to England or Ireland so looking for some ideas of what to see on a a short trip to London and Dublin. Any advice would be very welcome.

Oh wow, lucky kids.

I've alway liked the Tate Modern. Royal Albert Hall is right across from Kensington Palace and just down from Kensington High Street which has affordable shopping, cinemas etc. Hamleys Toy Store is a regular stop, they have a candy and ice cream shop at the top I seem to recall. I generally picked up the requisite bags of football themed items cheaply at Woolworths in Camden Town. The parks are great and all the London doggies are so cute. Speakers' Corner is quite interesting. I've taken cheap bus day trips to Stonehenge and Salisbury that were fine, though it's crazy windy/freezing. Time Out London is the place to look as your date gets closer. I've always stayed near Royal Albert Hall but never attended anything there. With the tube you'll find you guys can get around quick and can hit lots of sites in one day or even a half day. I've always loved the walk from Buckingham Palace to Parliament, photo opportunities galore. I have a niece who's a Sherlock Holmes fan and I can't imagine her missing a trip to Baker Street.

A favorite cheap cinema in London http://princecharlescinema.com/index.php.

Dublin is much more compact, I love Ha'penny Bridge and O'Connell Street. Always use the General Post Office there, it's pretty amazing. If you're looking for a family room, the Charles Stewart guest house http://www.charlesstewart.ie/en/off O'Connell (birth place of "Buck Mulligan" in Ulysses, Oliver St. Gogarty) is very low budget but I like it, the location is great with nice people. Had more than a few Pogues fans in it as well. For some reason I'm not big on Grafton Street but that's just me.

Or how about devising a "Transmetropolitan" tour across London to visit places associated with The Pogues? I've always wanted to do that. Starting perhaps at the former Pindar of Wakefield?

If you're looking for other free stuff to do in London, my kids always liked the National Maritime Museum and the other stuff at Greenwich.

All good stuff, thanks for the info. Seattle is dead set on going to Liverpool as she is a huge Beatles fan and Jamaica insists we have to see Stonehenge so we may be adding a few days to the trip. Good thing I have not booked airfare yet...

Primrose Hill for the young Beatles fan, though you're already taking her to see how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.

Did I get that right? I believe I did

If you do decide on Liverpool feel free to look me up. I'll take you to a few places not in the guide books. :)

It seems Tony Iommi is in remission from cancer, and Black Sabbath are finishing & releasing their Rick Rubin-produced album "13" and then touring. Think I'll have to catch this, although I'm gutted to hear Bill Ward will not be a part of it (he says he would join if he was offered a "signable contrack"). Honestly, at this point, i'd be more excited about a line up with Ward and without Ozzy, who seems to have lost his filoodle imho. But Geezer & Iommi joined by the guy from Rage Against The Machine sounds like a good show, no matter who is fronting.

Two gigs in the last few days. First was Blackbeard's Tea Party, a six-piece ensemble from York who play rockish versions of folk songs, pirate songs, naughty songs and the like. Darn fine fun they are. Hot and sweaty. Recommended as a good night out.
Some pics:

Then the lovely Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham, doing their thing of lovely Scots folky tunes and a lot of storytelling. Though I am insanely jealous of a man of a certain age who still have a full head of hair.
Some other pics:

Though I feel I am getting too old for two gigs in three nights.

I can't believe Jon Dee agreed to come play our sleepy little town. I am promoting the show and will deliver a rip roaring crowd for his first visit to Dakota. You are all invited of course...

I went to see The Specials at Liverpool Olympia last night.

First I want to say a few words about the venue because it is an old theatre after all. Situated on the outskirts of town not far from where I live (driven passed it many a time, never been in until last night), the Liverpool Olympia is now used for sporting events (mainly boxing, you've probably seen it on The Big Fight Live on ITV)and gigs. But it did not start out this way.

Until last night I thought it had been a music hall but after consulting Wikipedia found out this was not the case. It actually started out life as an indoor circus and variety theatre built in 1905 as a response to the nearby Royal Hippodrome which was demolished in 1984. Jake and I think it could be the circus mentioned in The Beatles song Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite as the famous Henderson family performed there, although I can't find any evidence of this. The theatre was purchased by ABC Theatre Company and converted into a cinema in 1930 and was used as a Royal Naval Depot during the second world war. It has also been a ballroom and a bingo hall.

Jake is a pain in the backside at gigs. He is forever analysing the sound and making complaints about it. Now I agree with him that last night the sound was not great, it was possibly where we were sitting, it could have sounded better down in the stalls who knows. The Specials however, what a great live act, not as good as The Pogues though obviously. :)

Apart from the location, it's in a rough area, the Orange Lodge club is 100 yards in one direction, the new(er) Liverpool Irish Centre is 100 yards in the other, this would be a great place for a band like The Pogues to play. It's fairly big, along the same size as the Royal Court, Liverpool and has plenty of standing room in the stalls so much that I'm not sure how I couldn't find any stalls tickets on line on the first day the tickets went on sale.

On a side note, the beer was way over priced. I was thinking of starting a thread about this. Jake paid £8 for two cans of Guinness! Needless to say we only had one of those.
