And saw 'em last night here in Vancouver. A group where the label of "supergroup" truly applies - even tho Tom Wilson (ex of Junkhouse), Stephen Fearing, and Colin Linden are stars of the Canadian roots-music scene in their own right - and great live performers - the combination of the three (plus a rhythm section) makes a huge rocking noise bigger than any of it's constituent parts. Amazing show.
Their most recent album is "Kings & Queens", an album of duets, and a few of the Queens joined them on stage last night: Exene Cervenka (of punk band "X"), Amy Helm (Levon's daughter, of "Ollabelle"), and Kendel Carson on fiddle & vocals. Helm threatened to upstage them, but that was solved by bringing New-Brunswick blues singer/guitarist Matt Anderson out on stage who immediately stole the show with his head-banging barnstorming style. I've seen him live before, and he's always like that, but backed by this group took him to a whole other level entirely.
The boys rallied and closed the show with namesake Wille P. Bennett's "White Line" and rocked it out hard, bringing the spotlight back on themselves. But I think Amy Helm might have stolen it again during the encore when the whole ensemble backed her on Buddy Miller's "Wide River To Cross". Many of us had seen her sing it 18 months ago with her father Levon just around the corner, and I dare say there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
Fabulous show, and my first ever at the Vogue Theatre, which is a lovely venue.
