Horslips (Old Fruit Market, Glasgow) 18 January

We showed you ways to play old airs/ You said we could be friends

The fascinating reacquaintance of the Horslips and their audience with the band's classic 1970s material branches out into the next Parish along, and the party shows no signs of flagging. That this music contains within its complex DNA a tentative embrace of a post-DeValera Ireland of some unknown and unquantifiable possibility is undeniable. That it survives the betrayal of that foolish optimism and thrives anyway seems to merely add to its power and to the band's innate likeability. It's equal parts Sean O'Riada, the New York Dolls and the Pink Floyd for sure but the alchemy occurs somewhere else: a crucible left unguarded by Myles na Gopaleen, James Stephens and Jimmy Joyce. By their fans shall ye know them.

Indeed. Actually, he and Skid Roper did a whole US tour opening for us. Good people

Saw Mojo sans Skid Roper at Bogarts in Longbeach, CA. Many times through out the night people shouted "where is Skid?" It was the first show I saw Mojo do after he parted ways with SKid and I did indeed miss his presence on stage. Not sure if the band that night consisted of Mojo's latest Toad Liquors but I do recall enjoying the show very much. Also their support band The Forgotten Pigs, which may have been the first time I ever saw an upright bass on stage at a "rock concert". FYI Skid put out a couple of solo efforts of which I bought Lydia's Cafe that is worth giving a listen to:

I've seen Mojo a few times, but sadly without Skid. I liked several Skip Roper songs that he did with Mojo, but I could never get into the album pictured. It's the only one I tried. But I do think Mojo's best work was with Skid. Although the Mojo Nixon and Jello Biafra album was especially good as well.

I've only seen Mojo once, with The Toadliquors, and thought it was a great show (tho' it was as a 3-piece, and i woulda loved piano too, as it's a big presence on the albums). He seemed to play all the dumb sex songs first, then launched into The Hamlet Chicken Plant Disaster and, for me, the gig took off from there. The man is a brilliant lyrical improviser. I mean, it's one thing to make up words on the spot, but quite another to rhyme a fair share of 'em. Maybe in another dimension he exists as a freestyle rapper.

While i'm not sure i can pick favourites, i LOVE his stuff with the Toadliquors, and find i listen to it more often than the Skid Roper stuff. That said, I Hate Banks is hard to beat.

WEW - El Corazon - Seattle Feb 04

Miles covered: 240
Hours in the car: 6
Home at: 4:00 AM

Setlist (in no particular order)

Dry
Johnny Law
Old Devils
Hell or High Water
Hard Times
Cold and Dead
Sometimes Our Dreams Float Like Anchors
Burn My Body
Midnight
a couple of new songs from the new album 'Field Songs' due out this spring!
Diggin' My Grave
Lift My Jug
Porchlight
One Man's Shame
Take It On The Chin
Black Iowa Dirt

Will had some banjo issues early on - only did about 3 songs before he realized the reason the banjo wouldn't stay in tune - there was some damage to the bridge, apparently from overzealous baggage handlers. So the rest of the set was all on acoustic guitar and kick drum. Maybe a backup banjo for next tour?

Otherwise, Will gave a great show, and as always was gracious and appreciative of the response. Crowd was small (150 or so) but enthusiastic, singing along with the louder songs, but also knowing when to shutthefuckup for the quiet ones. There was even some dancing going on down in front.

looking forward to the next show!

Spent yesterday evening with The Hold Steady. A seriously excellent, hot and sweaty, rocking gig, with a band that was obviously having a fantastic time on stage themselves. Very good live act indeed, they will not let you down. If they're coming anywhere near you, I'd highly recommend acquiring a ticket. 8)

Tripple. Steve, if you're ever heading to Seattle for a show, drop me a PM. I'd be happy to share the driving if it happens to be a rare night that i can pull it off!

Word to the wise. The wise who live in/around Vancouver, anyway:

Balkan dance party at the Ukrainian Hall on Saturday, March 5th.
Tix sell out pretty fast, I hear.
Details at:
http://www.orkestarslivovica.org/events ... and-dance/

Might be the mellowest act of the night, but Lache Cercel's Roma Swing Ensemble will be worth the price of admission alone, if you've never seen him (used to play regular at Latin Quarter on Commercial & Cino on Cambie).

I saw PRINCE last night in Oakland, California strictly out of curiosity.

Wow!

This reviewer summed it up perfectly: http://www.spinner.com/2011/02/25/prince-oakland-review-welcome-2-america/

The artist known as Prince became King of Oakland, Calif. this week, bringing his 'Welcome 2 America' tour to the Oracle Arena for a three-show stand, which was announced and ticketed less than a week in advance. It was a risky move given today's economic climate and the volatility of concert attendance in recent years. And yet, Prince pulled it off, seamlessly. And it wasn't the only risk he took with these shows -- it was just the first of many.

Whereas Monday night's grand opening featured special guest Carlos Santana and an unexpected cover of Rihanna's 'Rude Boy,' and whereas Wednesday's show was a hit parade through Prince's back pages, the third and final performance was reserved for an all-out funk-off. It was a dance party that lasted nearly three hours and which spanned the width of Prince's multi-era career, opening up with a string of guitar bangers before giving way to the show-stoppers.

And although he's been known pay homage to his heroes for entire show segments, it was still a treat when Prince brought out bassist Larry Graham -- who opened the first two nights with his band Graham Central Station -- for a little tribute to Sly & the Family Stone, of which, Graham was an integral member. Prince wedged his own 'Alphabet St.' inside a Sly & the Family Stone medley which included 'Everyday People,' 'Thank You (Fallentinme Be Mice Elf Agin)' and 'Dance to the Music.'

In the end, Prince had a hard time saying goodbye to Oakland -- he said parting words such as "goodnight" and "thank you" and "we'll see you next time" for nearly two hours, and he even left the stage entirely multiple times, only to come back for seconds and thirds. After three encores -- which packed such punches as 'Nothing Compares 2 U,' 'Let's Go Crazy,' 'Delirious,' '1999,' 'Purple Rain,' and 'Kiss' -- Prince waited for the house lights to come on and the place to start clearing out before deciding to have one more go of it. Those who stayed were treated to even more of Prince's chart toppers, including 'Raspberry Beret,' 'Cream,' and -- finally -- 'U Got the Look.'

Given the unconventional, hit-and-run nature of Prince's 'Welcome 2 America' tour, who knows where he'll strike next. But his stay at the Oracle Arena in Oakland was, by all accounts, victorious. "Bring foot spray because it's going to be funky," Prince told reporters at a press conference for the tour, back in October. "Come early, come often ... no two shows will be the same." He's got that right.

Saw him in NJ in December. Absolutely fantastic.

just bought tickets to see New York Dolls the night before St. Jimmy's with the Pogues. I almost feel like I should put this in the "confessions" thread
