My husband and I attended a WEW show in an Iowa City bar a few weeks back. I nearly talked myself out of going due to being on a Friday night after a long week, but it was JUST what I needed! We battled an unexpected U of I Homecoming parade crowd to find parking, enjoy delicious falafel and get in line for the doors at 9. There is no longer smoking allowed in public places (I don't agree with the law, but love the smokefree air!) which made the evening more pleasant than the last time we'd been there. There are also no tables and just a few chairs, so I stood for hours and when Will took the stage, elbowed my way through to the 2nd row in the standing room only crowd. (There is something to be said for having white hair and being older than everyone else there.) Will has an adoring and large fan base in Iowa City, so emotions always run high for his shows. It was a wonderful time, 3:30 a.m. arrival time at home and aching feet notwithstanding!

I saw The Might Boosh on Friday. Very, very funny indeed. Brilliant audience participation / dressing up.

They were much better than Steve Coogan who we saw last week. He did a brilliant Pauline Calf but the rest of the characters were only funny in parts. He pushed the boundaries with his finale - a kind of vaudeville / Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins number sweetly entitled "Everyone's a bit of a Cunt Sometimes". Very catchy. Mrs s wanted to give him her "it's not big and its not clever lecture".

He got some pretty bad reviews too.
I reckon that with going to comedy you can never be quite sure what you're going to get. Last comedy we went to see was Dylan Moran, who was excellent. Previous one to that was a bunch of people from the Edinburgh festival and much of it was absolutely dire.

Went to see The Duhks a few nights ago, which was the first time I've seen the new lineup. It's a pretty rare thing where a band can lose its lead singer and end up as good if not better than before, but they definitely managed it. Sara Dugas is a tremendous vocalist who can sing with subtlety and power when the song calls for it, and the rest of the band are ace musicians. Overall, it was a great show, and I wouldn't hesitate to see them again when they make the swing South.

Next up, Great Big Sea on October 28, and The Wiggles on November 16. One is for me, and one is for my daughter. Try to guess which is which.

I'll get me coat..

I saw the truly wonderful James Hunter tonight. Why this man is playing to audiences of a couple of hundred I will never know. He should be a star.

We are *big* fans of Jessica Harvey, their first singer, so we were worried... and you're right, Sarah Dugas is also amazing. We missed their show here last month, and i havn't heard the new album yet, but i bought a download of a concert from Festivallink.net (which includes 3 different takes from 3 shows on "Whole Lotta Love", which they turn into a cajun rocker & guest with John Paul Jones on one from Merelfest!) and i was just blown away.

We did make it to Gogol Bordello the other week after our babysitter scare... and what a night. We loaded up on single malt, danced the night away, some hot young thing was totally humping my leg at one point, my wife was just about taken to the floor (in a good way) by another atractive woman... was it the violin? The gypsy beat? Something was making people randy, for sure. Even went into the pit for a while, for the first time in many years, and ran into an old roomate! All in all we had a great time, and have decided we will get ourselves out, without the kids, once a month. Probably not only to Gogol Bordello shows, but out somewhere anyway.

And oh yeah, the band were great. But we spent too much time dancing too close, where the sound was crap. Standing back 1/2 way in the room or so, the mix was much better, and definately better than when we saw 'em there (Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver) last year.

Whew...that was quite the show. At Harrisburg's premier concert venue, the intimate Sunoco Performance
Theater in the Whitaker Center complex. Musicianship of a calibre you don't often see outside of a symphony
hall.

I'm not a major FZ acolyte - the one show I saw of the man himself, back in the day, was not nearly as musically
impressive as this long-running tribute show.

Hysterically funny, and mind-boggling in its complexity - they did the half-hour opus "Billy The Mountain" perfectly,
as well as absolutely thrilling versions of serious instrumentals like "Peaches En Regalia" and "Black Napkins".

And throughout it all, Dweezil shredded. SHREDDED I say!

Louie Louie intro
Purple Lagoon
Pygmy Twylyte QT Version
Cheepnis
Magic Fingers
Gas Station
Bamboozled by Love
Billy the Mountain
Chunga's Revenge w/Band Solos
Joe's Garage
Fembot in a Wet T-Shirt
Peaches En Regalia
Yellow Snow
St. Alfonzo
Father O'Blivion (WAS THIS DEDICATED TO ME? )
The Torture Never Stops

Encore:
Black Napkins
Camarillo Brillo
Zomby Woof

The setlist changes every night. ANYONE who likes ANYTHING about Frank Zappa should by all means see this show.

Next up: tomorrow it's our thousandth time seeing Dr. Ralph Stanley, at the same lovely venue. Cool week in Harrisburg!

Dr. Ralph was great, as always.

Before the concert started, Ralph had invited the public to a jam session.
When we got to the Whitaker Center, the lobby was full of people playing guitars, mandolins
and banjos. Interspersed throughout were the Clinch Mountain Boys. What a thrill to play
with guys like that! Unfortunately I couldn't drag my upright to the show, so I went over to
the merch table, where the good Doctor sat looking a bit bored. I bought a 4-disk box set
the Stanley Brothers' mid-period King/Starday recordings, and Ralph autographed it. I
thanked him for his endorsement of Sen. Obama and shook his hand.

The jam session broke up, and my Sweetheart and I talked to the guys in the band.
We've seen them so often from the front row that they remembered us, and treated
us like old pals. Steve Sparkman in particular was as sweet as he could be; despite
his super-human banjer-pickin' abilities, he has absolutely no ego.

I walked over to talk to bassist Jack Cooke, and told some people who were thinking
of buying his CD that it is FANTASTIC. That made Jack smile, especially when they bought
a copy. Dewey Brown the fiddle player smiled and chatted. I felt kinda giddy, and very
fortunate. These guys are world-class.

The show was great, although a bit polite compared to seeing them on their home turf.
They played a 45 minute set, which included "O Death", then took a break to sell more swag.
When they returned they played requests, which meant a Stanley Brothers' Greatest Hits
set...which was fine with me!

They played five songs I have at home on 78, which is always a unique thrill for me:
"The White Dove", "Blue Moon of Kentucky", "Man of Constant Sorrow", "Pretty Polly",
and the set-ender "Orange Blossom Special". Plus they did "Angel Band" and "Rank Strangers".
And a whole lot of other stuff. I was in heaven!

They've announced dates and artists for this year's Memorial Day festival - Gillian Welch and David Rawlings
are going to be there again.

And so are my Sweetheart and I!

I am green with envy and can picture Jack Cooke's big smile. He was a true gentleman and there was no way I could refuse to buy his CD when he asked me and yes it is FANTASTIC.

I may catch him in brooklyn next week at South Paw with Murder by Death. Unfortunately every 6 months WEW comes to nyc but always plays late during the week, and far away from where I live. And he' s never the headliner. I'm really just making up excuses for being a bad fan.
