So what are the Damned like these days, georgecat? I haven't seen them since they came and turned the city Christmas lights on here. (Yes, honest...) And haven't yet got tickets for this year's Christmas tour.

Bought tickets for the Eagles of Death Metal yesterday. One of the firehazard girls tells me I will be facing certain death if I go to this gig. Now there's a challenge...

Eagels of Death Metal are awesome.
The Damned is as fabulous as always. Still the same wonderful band as always, with the crowd still freaking out with each song, me included. I might be a bit partial because one is a good friend, but when you hear Smash it Up or I Feel Alright live, it's obviously not just me that can see their brilliance.

And bought ticket to see JET in a really really really small club in LA. They are playing in a few weeks. I can't wait!!

Cheers, georgecat. Looking forward to Eagles of Death Metal, who'll be playing in a tiny venue less than a mile up the road from home - though it's ages away yet. :)
Still trying to work out if I can fit The Damned into my schedule.

Last night was the Saw Doctors. Perhaps I shouldn't say this, but blimey they've aged since the last time I saw them. Mind you, they'd probably say the same about me, I guess. Or maybe they were always that old, and it's just my memory playing tricks on me (it's me age...)
Anyway, they were still full of energy, and played a two-hour set. And our local Galway crowd were out in force and having a fine time.

Tonight off to see the Dirty Pretty Things (support from Larrikin Love). They will not, I assume, look so old.

  Think the Saw Doctors have always looked a little, um, mature. :)

And do report back on Dirty Pretty Things. I liked the album and thought Carl whatsisname made the right decision to get as far away from Pete Doherty as possible.

The crowd probably like EoDM better. I heard Axl was out of his mind way before this. Word got around he's lost his marbles.

Last Saturday my Sweetheart and I wrapped up a run of great weekends by going to Little Steven's Underground Garage a Go Go Tour when it pulled into Philly. We got to the TLA as soon as the doors opened and were front and center for all of the acts - a local band, The Frantic (decent band) ; the Charms, from Boston (rather generic chick rock); the incredible Chesterfield Kings, the Supersuckers, and the utterly fabulous New York Dolls. In between bands we were entertained by 4 go-go dancers who looked like extras on Laugh-In.

The Chesterfield Kings play like the 1966-era Rolling Stones fronted by Iggy Pop. Their singer, Greg Prevost, destroyed two mike stands right in front of us (I brought a shard of one home as a souvenir) and spent most of the set in the audience, climbing up into the balcony, trying to rip curtains off the wall, all while the Kings played a set of stuff from "Let's Go Get Stoned" and "The Mind-bending Sounds of the Chesterfield Kings" (both highly recommended). The band was BURNING and Greg seemed totally out of his mind. It was real rock and roll. We loved it. The Supersuckers were also quite good, funny and hard-rocking, doing stuff like "Pretty Fucked Up", "Born With A Tail" and "Creepy Jackelope Eye", but they should've preceded the Kings, I think. Both are excellent bands, no matter what order they play in. But the Kings really left an impression.

The Dolls were... THE NEW YORK FRIGGIN' DOLLS. One of the greatest bands in history, imho, miraculously back and in fine form. The songs from the new album were just as good as the classics. Standouts were "Pills", "We're All in Love", and "Trash" was just unbelievable. Because of the nature of the show, they played less than they did when we saw them last year. They played from about 11:30 till 12:30 or so. Encores were "Personality Crisis" and "Gotta Get Away From Tommy".

After the show we hung around for a meet & greet and got to talk to them. I asked David Jo if he had any plans of playing with the Harry Smiths again. "Well, people ain't exactly beatin' my door down for that stuff." My friend Marc asked them to "scootch together" for a picture (do they say "scootch" anywhere but here in Pennsylvania Dutch Wonderland?) and David said "Why don't you just move back a little bit instead? we don't scootch." Syl said "Do we LOOK like people who SCOOTCH?" It was like being around Groucho and Chico Marx.

The Dolls are really great guys - Syl in particular seems like an absolute sweetheart - and they're one of the best bands in America, then AND now.
And the whole show was amazing, like a trip to some wonderful alternate universe, where $20 gets you a ticket to see some of the best bands in America play right in front of you - right in your face. It was the way things OUGHT to be.

My buddy Marc took this picture.

Dirty Pretty Things last night. Excellent gig, they're getting to be a fine live band. They started off looking a tad nervous, but grew into it as the set went on, and by the end were on top form, and relating very well with an extremely excitable (and very young) crowd. Mr Barat disappeared in among them at the end to the obvious consternation of the security, and only reappeared several long minutes later. As he has one of the finest pairs of legs ever seen on a man (or so I'm informed) it would have been a shame if any harm had come to him. Anyway, a good time was had by all, and I'd highly recommend them as a live act. And we came home with a signed drum skin too. All that cricket catching practice paid off at last.:)

Support came from Larrikin Love. Who were also excellent. A treat in store for Brixton. Worth getting out of the pub early for, I'd say. 8)

Next: Futureheads, on Monday. :)

An early, early memory of The Human League for me is watching the "Don't You Want Me" video in ... what? ... somewhere around 1983. They all looking stern and dramatic. He's looking jilted and stalkerish.

My aunt leans over and says "He's just angry that she took his lipstick."

Kinda wrecked the whole mood of that video.

"Zwartwerk" next week. A fine little festival, on which I played last year. Looking forward to see Suicide Commando and Sonar (again)!

Futureheads last night. They're a fine live band, always seem to put on a really good show. Good lively crowd, well up for the audience participation. And I love the Sunderland accents, take me back a few years...

Sustained a bit of damage to me knee and ankle and earoles, largely due to my foolish need to get as close to the action as possible, but that, my dears, is rock and roll. 8) And I do like the way the bar staff at my local venue know what I'll be having before I open my mouth to tell them. :)

Support from The Maccabees and The Enemy. Good stuff.

Next up: Oysterband on Wednesday. :)
