So what were the Chieftains like?

My Sweetie and I saw Steve Earle and Allison Moorer (sp?) tonight. Allison was a very good opening act. Her last song, Sam Cooke's "Change Is Gonna Come", was one of the highlights of the whole evening.

Steve was great as always, and the DJ stuff worked better than I thought it would, although there was maybe a little too much of it. He used the DJ in conjunction with a 12-string and some effects on his voice to do a really strong version of "CCKMP". I liked the solo stuff better, though...two songs from "Train A' Comin'" , and my all-time favorite "Jerusalem" in the encore. "I'm gonna keep singin' this song till it comes true," he said.

He made us sing "Steve's Hammer" and told us it sucked the first time through. "You sound like a bunch of Republicans," he said.

Tomorrow night is the first night of our local blues festival. This is the place we got to see David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Hubert Sumlin, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Otis Taylor last year.

O'Blivion, you are the one to ask: Which of these groups should we be sure to see? (in the offchance I cannot persuade my husband to see them all): Louisana Red, Eddie Turner, and Magic Slim and the Teardrops. We for sure will be watching Leon Redbone, whom I have loved for many years and got to see in concert a year or two ago as well.

Well, I've never seen any of them, but I just looked 'em up on the Google and they all sound good. Magic Slim's the best known. Louisiana Red's the oldest. Eddie Turner's nickname is "Devil Boy". To be on the safe side, I'd suggest seeing them all.

None of them are of quite the same vintage as last year's line-up, though. Wow. That was the closest you're going to get to Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters.

It was my May Ball last evening and I would be on here bragging about my Sugababes watching experience  but the pulled out.
Never mind i say ABBA tribute band Bjorn Again and they played Pretty Vacant by the Sex Pistols. It was awesome! The best/funniest thing I have seen in ages!

Just returned from my daughters Spring Concert. The theme was "Springtime Around The World" and featured songs from USA, Mexico, Caribbean, Africa and Japan. Nothing brings a smile to my face like watching 3rd graders singing Bob Marley's Three Little Birds. They also did Calypso, Calypso was that a Belafonte number?

The sound check for this event is happening right now and I can view the stage out my hotel window. Might have time to check it out between business convention and dinner meeting this evening...

SOCO MUSIC EXPERIENCE – sorry, kids, this one is for the 21-and-up crowd. With an eclectic lineup that includes Against Me!, Ghostland Observatory, Supersuckers, Ryan Shaw and Bang Camaro, you can expect a diverse crowd with one common goal: to have a good time. The SoCo train rolls into town Sat., MAY 17, and sets up shop at Centennial Olympic Park. Boasting two stages, the SoCo & Lime Dome with DJ Star Eyes manning the turntables, and multiple vendors serving up food, drinks and more, there really is no excuse to miss out. Did we mention it's free? Free. 3 p.m. Centennial Olympic Park, 265 Park Ave. 404-222-7275. http://www.southerncomfort.com/scmxatl.

Last night went to Blind Willie's here in Atlanta, GA to watch Francine Reed who's known for her duet and backup work with Lyle Lovett. I had a hard time hearing her lyrics due to a combination of my poor hearing and a group of yuppies who surrounded our table and talked and cackled incessantly (every other word out of one bimbo's mouth was a shrill "Oh My God"). Why do they bother coming to the venue if they don't want to give the performers the respect they deserve? We bailed after one set...

Ah, I do so enjoy the elementary school concerts! Last spring, as I was lining up my kindergartners for their first appearance on a big stage, one of the little boys told me "I'm so happy I'm about to cry!"

Sad that budget cuts are impacting school music departments negatively...

Saw Fred Eaglesmith in Atlanta last night for another great and funny concert. It was a little sad to think this was the first Fred concert without Willie P. Bennett, but this version of the band is really good, and definitely the loudest I've ever heard Fred play. Social commentary range from socialized medicine to gas powered vibrators versus the standard battery-operated variety. The new tunes are pretty good and kind of sounded to me like a tent revival of the damned.

I've been stewed in that place before! I was there in '97 after a Stones concert. Couldn't rightly tell you who was playing - it was a big black lady singing "Wang Dang Doodle" but NOT Koko Taylor - but I do recall the bar being a lovely, dingy dive with a horrifying unisex bathroom. I think I still have a Blind Willie's t-shirt somewhere.

The highlight of Dr. Ralph Stanley's festival this year was definitely the two performances by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings.

They are simply amazing - amazing songs, mindblowing harmonies and incredible interlocking guitars. Rawlings sounds like a whole band with his 1935 Epiphone acoustic. Gillian's songs are timeless, flawless gems, and their choice of covers ("50 Miles of Elbow Room" by the Carter Family, a Blue Sky Boys song, and an encore of"Jackson" by Johnny & June) was inspired.

Ralph and the Clinch Mountain Boys were as solid as ever and played several songs I didn't hear last year..."Little Birdie", "Stone Walls and Steel Bars" and the absolutely sublime "Angel Band" (at my request!) And once again, I videotaped everything.

Off to see the lovely Cara Dillon at the weekend.
Likes the warm feeling but is tired of all the dehydration.
