On Monday night I saw Th' Legendary Shack Shakers at the Luminaire in Kilburn, a double first for me for both band and venue, both highly reccomended.

It has been a long time since I saw a live band put on such an absorbing show, plenty of blood sweat and mucus, glad I wasn't down the front.

I seem to remember that they supported the Pogues on one of their recent tours of the US (possibly last years west coast tour), a brave choice if Monday night's show was anything to go by as they would be an impossible act to follow.
I ain't doin' no deal with the devil until he starts a loyalty card scheme.

How were James??

Im seeing them on Saturday night in Manc, seen them more than i've seen the Pogues over the years!!

I thought they were excellent, so many great songs, one of them bands that you don't allways realise have done so much and a great live set, how was Manchester ?

They rocked big style. I think there is a future, a truly great gig.

two Sundays ago -- Bill Callahan. Incredibly gorgeous sound, amazing live show.

last Saturday -- Ollin. Billed as the East LA Pogues, we had to go. I loved it. Mostly their own songs, but they did turn out rousing fast covers of Old Main Drag and "Shane MacGowan's Dirty Old Town".
Canta, no llore.

Just saw Lou Reed in NYC. Amazing, just amazing.
Graham Parker last week.
Elvis Costello in a couple of weeks.
After a bleak winter (as some may recall), spring has brought some good music!

I saw (and videotaped) Graham Parker playing a "living room gig" a few years ago. Fantastic. His voice is exactly the same as it was back in the day. Of course it wasn't quite as incendiary as the gig I saw him play with The Rumour in the 70s, but it was still wonderful to see him.

Did he do "I'm Into Something Good" by Herman's Hermits?

Costello's at the Electric Factory, isn't he? Should be good. Haven't seen him since the 80s but he's a Great Entertainer.

My Sweetheart and I are off to Clinch Mountain, VA for Dr. Ralph Stanley's Annual Bluegrass Festival the end of this month.

Also playing is Porter Wagoner - who's not really bluegrass but I'm still psyched to see him - I HATED him when I was a kid and he had an awful TV show with his young protege Dolly Parton - speaking of "psych", I'll DIE if he does his psychobilly classic "The Rubber Room"!

The last act is Ralph Shuffler, who played guitar with the Stanley Brothers in the 60s. He and Ralph are both 80. Actually, so is Porter!

In my punky youth, I never thought the day would come that I'd be all atwitter at the prospect of seeing geriatric hillbilly patriarchs - but danged if it hasn't!

Graham is indeed in wonderful voice, and is, if anything, more fun to see now than back in the day - he's loose, funny, tells great stories. No Herman's Hermits this time out, but I've seen him pull some pretty nifty covers out from time to time.

Elvis is at the Factory, and the Nokia as well, and if all goes as planned (we know it doesn't always) I'll be at both, having one hell of a good time.

Enjoy Dr Ralph - that should be a splendid evening!

Really glad to hear that. I couldn't tell you how long it is since I've seen Mr Parker. He doesn't seem to have appeared in these parts for a long long time. Good to hear he's still going strong.

Going to see the remnants of The Jam tonight.

... and having seen The Guys Who Used To Be In The Jam But Who Aren't Paul Weller* last night, I'm pleased to report that Mr Bruce Foxton is still the possessor of one of the most remarkable mullets ever seen by humankind.

And they can still put on a gig. A bit slow getting going, but warmed up nicely by the end. I had a parka once...

*They've not got the most catchy name now. Someone suggested they should've called themselves The Spoonful.
