What book are you reading?

A place to discuss largely non-Pogues related things.

On the subject of archives, I've got a few hours in London to myself later in the week and intend visiting the "Rock n Roll Public Library" -the archives of Mick Jones.........don't suppose any Medusans have visited?

Browsing through books on Amazon earlier today, I'm still recovering from discovering a volume/biography from the drummer in "The Lurkers"- from memory called "Gods Lonely Men". I strangely feel the need to read it.

Indeed. Well, I'm not holding out much hope it's a decent rendering. Per the blurb on the rear of the paperback, it's the story of Jem Finer, Shane MacGowan, James Fearnley, Spider Stacey (sic) and Andrew Ranken.

Because I was expecting something like that I prefered to buy the original English version. But probably I will buy it anyway and report around here, wether it is a decent translation.

The main problem with playing in Germany is it seems to involve lengthy motor journeys which, barely tolerable though they often were back in the day, are out of the question at this stage in our lives.

We do have aeroplanes nowadays, you know? ;-)

And our high speed ICE trains with a comfortable first class that I enjoy very much when travelling someplace to defend some guy.

But seriously: A well planned tour would work with hardly any lenghty motor journeys.

The only way I can ever see us going back to play in Germany now is in a whistle-stop appearance on a summer Festival, but evidently, no suitable offer has yet been made.

Or a whistle stop at some German fan's place 8) :D

But seriously: There are so many festivals in Germany and the Pogues were pretty popular in Germany. I really wonder why no offer has yet appeared. I do have on theory though: The fact that you guys re-united is not really well known around here.

Just started reading Rum, Sodomy & The Lash by Jeffrey T Roesgen.

Unfortunately, I forgot I could (probably) buy it from the link off this site (bad Heather) as I bought it with the mound of CD's I got last week from Amazon (sorry DzM).

*tsk* My anemic wallet is very upset at you.

(Incidentally, if you bonk on one of the region-specific Amazon links on Medusa, ANYTHING you buy from that Amazon over the next 24-hours helps pay for Medusa's upkeep. So that entire stack of CDs? Yep. I'd get a cut of that action. WooHoo!)

Right. Books. What am I reading?

The plot is kinda slow and a little arcane. I swear I just read this passage:

"The default definition for the Drupal breadcrumb trail is givin in the file includes/theme.inc. The default function looks like this:

function theme_breadcrumb($breadcrumb) {
if (!empty($breadcrumb)) {
return '<div class="breadcrumb">'. implode(' >> ', $breadcrumb) .'</div>';
}
}"

Nancy Drew it ain't.

Two Caravans by Marina Lewycka. About guest workers picking strawberries in the UK. Far more funny that it sounds. Lewycka's writing is good-humoured, cynical and compassionate, traits not always seen together.

Have just started Lost Theatres of Dublin by Philip B Ryan (Philip's dad).

I spotted this sometime ago on Amazon before there was a thread here about it and thought it looked like an interesting read, but had other priorities that day, so put it on my mental list to order at a later date.

Anyway with my renewed interest with going to the theatre, I thought it was about time that I ordered it. I read through the foreward last night, but have not had much time to read it today, unfortunately. With the way things are in my life it'll probably take me a week or so to read it fully. So far, so good though, I think it was well worth the money.

I notice also that he wrote a book on George Formby, I may be interested in that if I can get hold of it.

Dad's book on George Formby was just a catalogue of his films and recordings, at a time when such information was not an internet formality. It was self-published but I think the George Formby Society in Blackpool kept it available after his death. His biographies of Irish comic actors Jimmy O'Dea and Noel Purcell (both Poolbeg Press) are out of print but both may turn up online.
